Oneworld Needs Expansion (Next possible member after Malev)
Oneworld is no longer the second largest airline alliance after KLM, Northwest and Continental joined Sky Team. I wonder why oneworld is so small and I can't see oneworld has any plan to invite other airlines. Someone says oneworld needs quality rather than quantity. But I think that oneworld has too few members.
Does anyone know which airlines will join oneworld soon?
Japan Airlines has good relationships with American Airlines, Cathay Pacific and British Airways. Also, JL codeshares with other oneworld members (Qantas and Iberia) But why JL doesn't join oneworld? Its rival, ANA, is already a Star Alliance member. Does any one know when will JL join oneworld?
Possible oneworld new members:
Asia: Japan Airlines, China Eastern, Air China (CX has its 10% stake)
Europe: SN Brussels Airlines, Swiss (if LX fail to merge with LH)
Africa: Ethiopian? (South African -> Star , Kenya Airways -> Sky Team)
North America: Alaska Airlines (Good relationship with AA and has joined other oneworld members' FF programme such as CX)
South America: TAM (Codeshares with AA)
Latin America: Mexicana (Codeshares with AA & IB, rumors say it will soon codeshare with CX)

Oneworld is defenitely to small in terms of global coverage and members- specially in Asia ,Africa and the Middle East.
Many mid-size airports in Europe ,Africa or Asia are not connected to any major Oneworld hub - small example beeing Nuremberg which has neither British Airways,Iberia or any other Oneworld link.( many french cities, italian cities ,balkans, north african cities have no OW link )

OW defenetly needs some Central European memeber. SNBA seems to be the best for OW.
I was shocked when Swiss refused last year to join OW, I think it was the only good way to keep Swiss alive. Instead of that it seems sto be Swiss taken over by Lufthansa very soon.
Or maybe Olympic to have the fourth European airline fom the fouth corner of Europe.
I think Mexicana is 99,9% very first new member of OW.
Japan Airlines could be suitable in this alliance, but I think Air China will join to Star Alliance but not too soon.
Except SAA to Star and Kenya AW to SkyTeam I think there is not any other suitable African airline for any alliance.
I think TAM is closer to SkyTeam.
It will be interesting to see how OW will expand, but I don't think they will be able to reach back their former No.2 possition.

Europe: SN Brussels Airlines
Africa: N/L
North America: Alaska Airlines, WestJet
South America: TAM
Latin America: Mexicana

- Air China: I believe I heard Cathay Pacific and Air China were to merge under the AirChina name. Anyone knows more about this? If that's true, they will of course be incorporated in OW.cathayoneworld wrote: Possible oneworld new members:

- China Eastern joins Skyteam later this year.
- Swiss: They pulled out of OneWorld, so I doubt they'd be welcome back should the take over fail...
- Alaska/Horizon is more likely to join Skyteam than OneWorld
- same with TAM as they're already negociating with Skyteam (and codesharing + FF agreements with AF-AZ-DL)
- Mexicana? I thought they were members of Star or did they leave the alliance? I know they still codeshare with a number of Star partners (AC, LH...)
- SNba? Can't see it happen anytime soon (especially if they want their low-cost operation to join with them, I don't think BA would enjoy VIRGIN express in their alliance) but it's one of the last European carriers out of any global alliance.
As usual, time will tell...

A quick look on the Star Alliance website showed no Mexicana, so I's pretty sure that they pulled out of the Star Alliance.vflies wrote:- Mexicana? I thought they were members of Star or did they leave the alliance? I know they still codeshare with a number of Star partners (AC, LH...)
Does anyone knows why Mexicana did that?

Mexicana terminated their codeshare agreement with United Airlines in around 2002-2003. Maybe they wanted to have good relationship with AA so they left Star Alliance and start codeshare with AA and IB.
Air China and Cathay Pacific have announced they won't merge together in a near future. Swire will continue to be the biggest shareholder of CX. However, Cathay Pacific owns 10% stake on Air China, so this can lead CA to join Oneworld.Air China: I believe I heard Cathay Pacific and Air China were to merge under the AirChina name. MU has no relationship with any Skyteam carrier while it is codesharing with AA. Maybe you've misunderstood something. CHINA SOUTHERN wants to join Skyteam but not China Eastern.China Eastern joins Skyteam later this year.
Although Alaska Airlines codeshares with three Skyteam carriers, but AA provides more codeshare flights to Alaska than the other three Skyteam carrier ADDED together. (DL & CO & NW)Alaska/Horizon is more likely to join Skyteam than OneWorld
Oneworld is also negotiating with TAM to join it too.same with TAM as they're already negociating with Skyteam (and codesharing + FF agreements with AF-AZ-DL)

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexicana de Aviacion, Mexico's second-largest airline, said Thursday it will leave the global airline partnership Star Alliance.
Mexicana's departure was the result of a decision to end its code-sharing contract with UAL Corp.'s United Airlines under a new business strategy that may include a future partnership with another carrier....

After Malev joining oneworld, the next should be JAL and TAM.
TAM has ended its codeshare agreement with Air France recently. This shows that TAM really have intention to join oneworld (Currently, TAM codeshares with AA and KL).
In this case, TAM may also find another partner(s) in europe like Iberia and British Airways which is/are in oneworld.
How about JAL? JAL is remaining independent now. But i'm sure that JAL need to be a part of an international alliance since ANA is in Star Alliance and it has a close relationship with oneworld members. Therefore, oneworld should be the best choice for them.
Besides, oneworld has noticed that it really needs new members to compete with Skyteam and Star Alliance. I'm sure that oneworld will be more active and invite more members like JAL, TAM, some chinese airlines (China Eastern and, maybe, Air China) and a new european member (SN Brussels Airlines).
So, once again, congratulations, oneworld and Malev!
