JFK: Man that "loudly demanded another beer" died

Post by SN30952 »

Lee, 48, of Brooklyn, stood up in his seat on American's Flight 4 from Los Angeles and "loudly demanded another beer".
Flight attendants asked him to wait until they reached his row, but the man "got very, very belligerent and loud and disruptive and was told he would not be served any more alcohol."

The purser tried to calm him down, but he pushed her aside in order to get to the aisle.

Seven male passengers restrained the very large Mr Lee, and they and the flight crew put flexible handcuffs on him and put him back in his seat. (7 plus the crew, how much does that make?)

Lee got out of his seat again and the seven passengers* held him on his back on the galley floor until the plane landed.

After the landing, Port Authority police boarded the plane and administered CPR to Lee, who "was in some kind of distress".
William Lee was pronounced dead late Friday after he was removed from the American Airlines flight at John F. Kennedy International Airport. The cause of death had not yet been determined and was under investigation.
Prosecutors are investigating the death of the subdued man after he became disruptive on a American Airlines New York-bound flight.

In case you would like to experience such horrible things in the air you should book: American Airlines' AA 004 Los Angeles Int'l (LAX) Tl 4 12:30 John F Kennedy Int'l (JFK), T9 20:45. It's a Non-stop B762 flight of 5h15min.

*These men were reportedly members of a rugby team. No one will believe these rugbymen did themselves not have a few drinks....

Note: In Belgium, it is by law, forbidden to serve alcohol beverages to people in a state of inebriation. How is that in Bush's country?

Boy, this is going to be an interesting lawsuit to follow (someone from his familly will surely sue...).

In case anybody wonders "should I help if there is an unruly passenger", you might want to keep this in mind:

The Commander (captain, in most cases) of the plane may REQUEST that you assist (he may not REQUIRE that you do so). If you AGREE, he may AUTHORISE you to help. In that case, it would be hard to be sued by anyone because the captain has given you the authority.
If you do it just because you think it's right, the legal ramifications might be a bit trickier. And of course, what I just mentioned is ICAO law and there might be local laws that superseed it. But it's worth keeping in mind!
