El Al cargo 747 tyreburst on take-off @ TLV.

Post by SN30952 »

El Al cargo plane tyre exploded on take-off, its fragments causing a giant hole in the body of the plane. (tyreburst)

February 2
- a Boeing 747-200, an old model planned for retirement since ... 2001.
- an ELAL Flight 875, Far East bound - on board an engine for a grounded aircraft. See the detour ELAL has to make to the Far East
- Airport Tel Aviv, Ben-Gurion
- Time: shortly after midnight
- Incident: tyreburst

After take off the pilot radios an impact on the aircraft, fire-warning light go on and then off.

Airport services inspected the runway and fouind rubber debris.
The 747 had to make a 180. Emergency was declared, as the 747 landed with (almost) full tanks!!!.

A 1.5m hole near the undercarriage was immedetiately detected.
-> El Al now blames the airport authorities a foreign body must have torn the tire on the runway.
-> The authority says it was probably an old or damaged wheel.
-> The newspapers write: Major disaster averted.

What do we need to know about aircraft tyres and tyrebursts?
Tyre bursts are a regular occurrence for all aircraft, some aircraft being more prone than others.
In tyrebursts debris can puncture fuel tanks.
Aircraft tyres are inflated with nitrogen to 16 bar* (car tyre's @ 2 or 3)
Nitrogen has been used for many years in Formula 1 cars, the aircraft industry and road haulage.
Concorde tyres bursted 30 times as often as those on an Airbus A340. (Remember that supersonic the French thought that between 125 and 175 of the aircraft would be made.)

Read
No other tires in the world are required to carry the heavy loads and high speeds as that of an aircraft tire. and Aircraft tire -- treat it with tender loving care and safe operation is assured.

How was it tested on a 747-400? "The maximum brake energy refused take-off test", the test of maximum braking power during an aborted take-off"
Without reverse thrust, but simply with spoilers and manual brakes, the two Boeing test pilots have to bring their 747 to a halt as rapidly as possible. And this is with brakes that are worn right to the very limits of what is permissible. In a matter of seconds the heavily loaded jumbo is standing safely on the runway. In fact it has halted 300m sooner than was planned. But its smoking tyres are still heating up, until one after the other their "plugs” (safety valves) blow and release the dangerous excess pressure into the air before it can cause an explosion. Once all the plugs have blown, then the aircraft is deemed to have passed the test

*A B707 tyre bursted about five minutes after landing at Stansted, pieces of that tyre were found more than a mile away.

Note: Normal air is 80% nitrogen anyway.
See what tyre size(s) are used with - B747-200

That's why I mentioned Concord, that aircraft was grounded and ended its career after a tragic tyreburst.
I have seen what such a burst can do to an apron vehicle*. That's the reason we also had the passengers walking way around the main landing gear, and in no occasion come close to the nose wheel when disembarking via the stairs in Africa.

*Our african assistant mechanic, who was supposed to drive that vehicle never showed up again after the incident, so much he got frightened by that happening again.

Elal and tyres, The 4x-AXG - believe - ( the 747 what crashed in Amsterdam ) was only allowed to fly with new tyres ( before every flight the plane receive new tyres :!: when the plane did not receive new tyres, she was not allowed to land in the USA :!:

2 months before crashing the same plane gets an tyres burst during landing at New York jfk, and 6 weeks before the crash he got an tyre burst at schiphol. so Elal has some history with tyre bursts

I do certainly remember what they first said after the 747 cargo crash in Amsterdam. The word "Palestinian" was used.

I have the book from the enquete in late `90, and direct after the crash the Dutch prime minister was informed that it was the result of an terrorist attack. He said that during his inerview @ the enquete

Nowadays it's some neighbours in the North, who are guilty of all evils.
btw it's http://www.haaretz.com/ if you would like to check.

That's the newspaper that advertises with this, in the left corner of its webpage.

well yes, dear Luchtzak members,
I appreciate it a lot that you did your own checking. They always blame somebody else.
