SalamAir press conference in Kigali on June 19, 2026. Mitravi GSA will serve as the airline's representative in Rwanda. The airline appears confident about the route's success, drawing on its past experience. Although the Rwandan market is growing, it remains far smaller than the Kenyan market, which is significantly larger.
Mr. Al Bulushi stated that SalamAir’s experience in neighboring Kenya gives the airline confidence that the Kigali route has significant potential for growth over time.

"We began operations in Nairobi with two flights, then moved to three, and finally to four. We are now planning to operate daily flights from Nairobi," he noted.

"We aim to do the same from Kigali. We are starting with two flights, but we will increase the frequency." »
Beyond connecting traffic (currently, only India** and others South Asians destinations are easily accessible with a short layover; for other destinations, longer layover required—notably via DXB, a major hub for Kigali), the airline is banking on point-to-point demand. This demand is expected to rise naturally thanks to visa facilitation (visas available on arrival) and the cultural and economic ties linking Rwanda and Oman. The Sultanate of Oman had a presence in Rwanda —far less significant than in Tanzania, but a presence nonetheless—resulting in descendants living in both countries. There are also 2,400 Rwandans currently residing in Oman (https://www.instagram.com/p/DTathj4jKfs/).

For comparison, the number of Rwandans living in France is estimated at 3,800 (https://www-insee-fr.translate.goog/fr/ ... r_pto=wapp)

KLM is continuing non-stop flights to Kigali at least until August 10, 2026. Flights to Entebbe were scheduled to resume in early July, then mid-July, then late July; finally, according to the KLM website, flights to Entebbe will resume on August 10, 2026. KLM flights to Entebbe have been suspended since June 1, 2026, due to the Ebola outbreak. US authorities require anyone who does not hold a US passport to quarantine outside the US for 21 days before traveling there, which creates a logistical headache for flight crews.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Starting August 1st, RwandAir will increase service on the Kigali–Paris CDG–Brussels route from three to four flights per week, with an additional flight on Sundays. For the time being, this schedule is set to continue through the winter season. Regarding the Kigali–Paris CDG route, passenger numbers stood at 28,749 in 2025 (a 16.1% decrease compared to 2024). This decline is due to competition and the fact that RwandAir is no longer permitted to fly over the DRC. The airline suspended the Kigali–Brazzaville route—likely the most popular destination from CDG—while flight times for the Kigali–Douala and Kigali–Libreville routes are longer, resulting in a loss of passengers.

2025 was also a challenging year, marked by flight cancellations and reduced frequencies due to aircraft issues (heavy reliance on wet-leasing from Hi Fly, Gullivair, and Maleth Aero) and snowy weather in early 2025. There were 287 flights in 2025 compared to 319 in 2024 (see statistical bulletins: 2025 [p. 12] and 2024). In French sorry

https://www.ecologie.gouv.fr/sites/defa ... n_2025.pdf
https://www.ecologie.gouv.fr/sites/defa ... 4_vweb.pdf

A return to growth is likely in 2026, driven by the launch of the Kigali–Zanzibar route and the reopening of the Kigali–Mombasa route. Additionally, Air France's decision to discontinue its CDG–Bangui route should allow RwandAir to capture some of that traffic.

Interestingly, when booking a ticket on the RwandAir website for a destination in Europe or North America not served by RwandAir itself, some connecting flights are with... British Airways. RwandAir serves London Heathrow daily, carrying 118,760 passengers in 2025 (down 1% compared to 2024: https://www.caa.co.uk/Documents/Downloa ... 25a1/17511). I am not sure if there are plans for a codeshare agreement or if it is strictly an interline arrangement, given that BA already has a codeshare with Kenya Airways in the region. However, British Airways does place its "BA" code on Nairobi–Kigali flights operated by Kenya Airways (BA7735/7) and Doha–Kigali flights operated by Qatar Airways (BA2350/1).

As for the future, a codeshare agreement with BA would be another great thing (if it's the case). RwandAir announced a codeshare agreement last month with EgyptAir, which serves Kigali three times a week (https://www.rwandair.com/media-center/n ... rtnership/). There have been agreements with Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways following the COVID-19 pandemic, and with Ethiopian Airlines since 2010 (https://corporate.ethiopianairlines.com ... code-share). However, codeshare agreements with Brussels Airlines (https://press.brusselsairlines.com/rwan ... artnership), Proflight Zambia (https://www.rwandair.com/fr/media-cente ... or-joburg/), PrecisionAir Tanzania (https://allafrica.com/stories/200711160857.html), and South African Airways (https://www.africanaviation.org/saa-sig ... -rwandair/) appear to have ended. Most of these were agreements signed between 13 and 19 years ago.

Pity to see the end of the codeshare agreement between Rwandair and Brussels Airlines. Several years ago, I already wrote that Rwandair seemed to me the ideal partner for Brussels Airlines in Africa: government stability, modern aircraft, ambition, nice African network. Unfortunately, I think that politics has overshadowed economy, resulting in missed opportunities.

Well i don't know since the when the code share has ended. I wonder if it's not when Brussels Airlines started Korongo Airlines. I mean the 1st Korongo Airlines flight in 2012.

In late 2000s, Brussels Airlines were among the 2 last candidates to buy stakes into RwandAir. Almost at the same time, the code share agreements btw RwandAir and Brussels Airlines started https://www.google.com/search?q=brussel ... s-wiz-serp

And on RwandAir side, from early 2010s RwandAir hired Lufthansa Consulting and started to talk with Ethiopian and Etihad for privatization, but talks have failed. Then Qatar Airways has arrived.

The inaugural Muscat-Kigali flight is fully booked—five days before the first flight and two months after reservations opened. The SalamAir website shows "Sold Out." Last night, I counted between 150 and 155 reserved seats (for passengers who had selected their seats).

It is possible that some seats were booked by officials, though the majority of passengers are likely ordinary travelers. The A321neo is configured with 4 business-class seats and 211 economy seats. The focus is clearly on inbound traffic; Rwanda exports far less than Uganda or Kenya.

I remain very cautious about the success of this route, just as I was with KLM’s service to Kigali. We were only 40 passengers boarded in Kigali on October 31, 2010 (roughly the same number as on the AMS-KGL leg)... for a route announced in May 2010. The flights operated via Entebbe. In 2026, Kigali "can fill an A330 alone" without the Entebbe tag (EBB stop is suspended due to Ebola).

Ouah, thanks for the info. It will be tight with only 3 A330s. Right now they operate some flights to Paris / Brussels and London with a departure time in the morning, instead of late evening.

I wonder what the CEOs of RwandAir and SalamAir discussed (https://www.flickr.com/photos/thenewtim ... 0334772050). RwandAir already has an interline agreement with... Oman Air (https://www.omanair.com/en_fr/alliances-and-partners)

KLM is postponing the introduction of the Entebbe stopover (on the Kigali-Entebbe-Amsterdam route) until early September 2026. Flights to EBB are suspended till early Sept26. Consequently, KLM flights to Kigali will continue to operate non-stop for at least another month and a half.

SalamAir's inaugural flight carried a total of 170 passengers, representing an 80% load factor. It remains to be seen how future flights will perform. https://www.newtimes.co.rw/article/3756 ... ness-links

RwandAir's fourth A330 will be a former Oman Air A330-200, built in 2009. The aircraft is currently in Amman. https://www.aerotransport.org/php/go.ph ... 1691&luck=. Note that the B737-800 (registration 9XR-WY) is also a former Oman Air aircraft.

Is there high demand or perhaps a strain on the B737-800 fleet? For the past week, RwandAir has been deploying its A330 to Johannesburg (https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/wb108) and Zanzibar (in the past, the A330 used to fly to Mombasa with a continuation to Dubai: https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/wb444). While using the A330 for Johannesburg happens occasionally, this is a first for Zanzibar. Seeing A330s on the Kigali-Lagos route, however, is standard practice.

SalamAir operates flights using the A320 (180 seats), which for me as a more sensible choice. Air Arabia does the same for East Africa—mainly using the A320 and occasionally the A321neo, though the latter is quite rare.

The A320 doesn't look "as empty" in terms of load factor—assuming, of course, that some passengers check in at the airport in Kigali rather than online. This screenshot was taken just under 15 hours before tomorrow's Kigali-Muscat flight. Of course, it's impossible to gauge the final load factor at this stage; sometimes there are 100–110 passengers checked in online.

Since returning 2 of their B737-800 fleet, 9XR-WQ last year and 9XR-WR early this year (currently in Amman for redelivery), their B737 fleet is strained again. So if one aircraft is down, they pretty much have to deploy an A330.

Yes and in the same time they phased out the 2 CRJ 900s, the last B737-700 and one Q400 is grounded. They were supposed to add Embraer E2 to replace them, but not updated since now 2 years.

However they have ended flights to Cotonou, Brazzaville, Kinshasa, Lubumbashi and Goma due to the ban to fly over DR Congo. It could be worst, if they have kept this network with the current fleet.

The first buildings (hangars and terminal) of the new Kigali airport are finally rising from the ground. Photos taken last month. The person who posted the photos on SkyscraperCity didn't cite the source, but I think I've found it. https://www.skyscrapercity.com/threads/ ... -3#replies.

An executive from the company Moto Egil (Portugal). https://rw.linkedin.com/in/joao-sousa-hse/en (https://www.linkedin.com/posts/joao-sou ... 53537-L1be)

The thread also features a video filmed a month ago showing columns being transported by trucks through Kigali, with the caption: "trucks transporting equipment for the new Kigali airport."

The Rwandan government plans to have the airport 75% complete by June 2027, with the aim of launching the first flights in late 2027 (https://atl.rw/subsidiaries/new-kigali- ... al-airport). There will be a 24/7 workforce presence. https://en.igihe.com/business/article/b ... -june-2027

It went largely unnoticed, but on June 1, 2026, the Qatar Investment Authority announced the completion of the transaction regarding the project. QIA acquired the stake previously held by Qatar Airways (60% of shares) in NKIA (New Kigali International Airport). https://qia.qa/en/Newsroom/Pages/QIA-pa ... wanda.aspx

QIA is also currently negotiating the partial privatization of RwandAir.

:o :o  !!

Manchester Airport's website has loaded Kigali-Manchester flights operated by RwandAir into its search engine. The flights are expected to operate via CDG.
Well, recently I revealed an airline was rumoured for Manchester.

Given its now on the Manchester Airport website, I can reveal it’s Rwandair, to Kigali.

Have applied to operate every Mon/Wed/Fri with A330 via Paris CDG, no start date yet.

WB702 arrives 0915
WB703 departs 1700
Source: https://x.com/SPD_travels/status/208824 ... 79/photo/1

It seems unrelated (even slightly), although I don't believe it. Even though Visit Rwanda is at Aston Villa, it doesn't mean there will be a surge in demand from Birmingham or the Northwest of England, and that everyone will go through Manchester. It's more the British market as a whole that has seen significant growth in British (especially English) tourists visiting Rwanda, with the Visit Rwanda and Arsenal partnership having ended this year.

Aston Villa is pleased to announce Visit Rwanda as the club’s Principal Partner, Official Tourism Partner and Official Coffee Provider. https://www.avfc.co.uk/news/2026/july/1 ... rtnership/

I’m honestly speechless. Yes, Manchester is generating a bit of buzz regarding Africa right now (Ethiopian, EgyptAir, Royal Air Maroc, Air Algérie, etc.). But I really don't see what RwandAir is doing there. You can't rely on point-to-point traffic; it has to be about connecting traffic. Sure, if you look at the five largest markets from MAN served by RwandAir, the total was 154,187 passengers in 2025—or 422 passengers per day. But given the competition at Manchester, it seems almost impossible for RwandAir to achieve decent load factors.

RwandAir would be better off sticking with codeshares to Manchester via Doha with Qatar Airways (WB1004, etc.) and Istanbul with Turkish Airlines (WB1315, etc.).

Lagos-MAN: 42,052 pax
Johannesburg-MAN: 41,995 pax
Harare-MAN: 29,903 pax
Nairobi-MAN: 23,881 pax
Zanzibar-MAN: 12,356 pax

I would have thought increasing frequencies to London was a less risky move. They secured slots to serve Gatwick again, in addition to Heathrow. There has been no confirmation from the airline yet.

WB does not have enough aircraft to operate new route now, unless 4th A330 arrives later this year. There are only 10 active aircrafts for the time being.

The 4th A330 was supposed to be deploy to FRA and to resume flights to India and China. But it seems that Manchester will open before. In the list, you have to add one Q400NG. The second one is grounded. I guess it's used as spare aircraft for the maintenance. The Dash Q400 is no longer built.

The director of Somalia's civil aviation authority has announced the launch of a Mogadishu-Kigali route starting in November 2026, operated by RwandAir. FlyNas (no date announced) and Salamair (September 2026) will also launch flights to Mogadishu. Somali Airlines is expected to resume its flights in mid-September 2026.

https://x.com/MAKeynan/status/2088732113248141759

This route seems a bit more logical to me than the one to Manchester. Somalia and Rwanda are part of the East African Community, so there's a certain logic to increase the point-to-point service. The Somali community in Rwanda is quite active. In addition, RwandAir's main markets for Mogadishu are:

Nairobi: 130,080 passengers
Entebbe: 31,159 passengers
London Heathrow: 24,873 passengers
Dubai: 5,369 passengers
Brussels: 5,292 passengers

Yes, not a big demand, even if without surprise Guangzhou is the main market:

CAN: 12 872 pax a big drop vs 2024 (between 22 000 23 000 pax)
Shangaï: 2 095 pax
Hangzhou: 2 048 pax
Beijing Capital: 1 645 pax
Beijing Daxing: 1 456 pax

It seems RwandAir has added a midnight flight to Dar es Salaam via Nairobi. I’m not sure whether this will become a long-term part of the schedule or if it is simply a short-term arrangement caused by the current fleet constraints.

As for the fourth A330, I think they are expecting it soon. They plan to increase Paris to five weekly flights from Sunday, 23 August, and it would be difficult to operate that alongside the daily London service with only three A330s.
