Qatar Airways says the surface below the paint on some of its A350s was deteriorating faster than expected and insisted it would not take more deliveries of the widebody jet until the problem was resolved.

Qatar Airways has grounded 13 A350s as the fuselage surface below the paint is degrading at an accelerated rate. Qatar Airways has already taken action to return its A330 fleet into service with immediate effect to offset some of the impact.

Qatar Airways said a problem with rapidly deteriorating surface paint that led to the grounding of 16 of its A350 has also affected lightning protection on the model’s fuselage and caused cracks on the composite structure.

Qatar Airways called on Airbus to admit that it had a problem with flaws on the surface of its A350s and ruled out buying A350F from the European company, effectively handing a potential B777X freighter deal to rival Boeing.

Qatar Airways chief executive Akbar Al Baker has said that problems with its A350 fleet will lead to passengers flying on leased aircraft in the coming months. As a result, the carrier has brought back into service six A380s which it had intended to retire.

In the face of the ongoing mischaracterisation of non-structural surface degradation on its fleet of A350 aircraft by one of its customers (Airbus doesn't name Qatar Airways but clearly refers to that airline), it has become necessary for Airbus to seek an independent legal assessment as a way forward to resolve the dispute, which the two parties have been unable to settle during direct and open discussions.

EASA has issued a preliminary warning that patches of lightning protection may have been wrongly fitted on over a dozen A350 jets, while Delta Air Lines has joined a list of carriers facing “paint issues”.

Airbus vs Qatar Airways, next episode: Airbus has revoked the contract for a third A350 ordered by Qatar Airways after the Gulf carrier rejected delivery in an ongoing dispute. The number of A350s grounded by the airline in the dispute has reached 23, bringing the value of compensation sought by the carrier to slightly over US$1 billion.

Unwanted consequence: Airbus is weighing a further delay in its production plan for A350 jets after sanctions on Russia and a legal fight with Qatar Airways weakened the outlook for deliveries. The current goal is to move from five A350s per month to six starting in early 2023.
