Likely usual diplomatic traffic (personnel, goods...) that may have gone over commercial flights before. The Russian diplomats expelled earlier this week were all at the UN in NYC.

I assume that planes rented from Russian companies will not be recovered and will be considered lost. Is there insurance for lessor aircraft manufacturers that covers this type of risk, in this case war?

Everything is possible on insurance level, but... what will they do without spare parts ?

Aeroflot A321neo, MSN 10595 reg. VP-BXT, reportedly flew unregistered and without insurance on 03 March 2022 from Cairo to Moscow as flight SU401, in an effort to avoid being repossessed by lessor SMBC Aviation Capital in Cairo.

Typically every risk is insurable until it is not. War may be an exception, but this is not an act of war, it is a political decision (sanction), normally insurable. Not sure about unwarranted seizure by a government, but hopefully nationalizing Aeroflot’s leased fleet is an empty threat. If they do carry it out, the little trade that is still legal with Russia will immediately become uninsurable and Russia (government/business) will pay upfront to import anything for years.

A standard default may be best case scenario for lessors. Insurance will pay, aircraft will stay stuck in Russia, and lease prices will not collapse when 300+ available aircraft hit the market all at once. Maybe some lessors have extensive cross-securitization rights and they can seize assets outside of Russia, but not likely in traditional aircraft leases – think seizing Volga-Dnepr’s AN-124 grounded in Toronto due to AirBridgeCargo defaulting on a 747 on the basis they are fully-owned subsidiaries of the same parent company.

WestJet and Sunwing merger deal may face additional scrutiny from Canada’s Competition Commissioner and Transport Canada over an indirect shareholder, Russia Steel magnate Alexei Mordashov, who was also a shareholder of TUI Group.

Airbus continues to source titanium from Russia and other countries. It said it was also obtaining titanium indirectly via its first-tier suppliers, all in compliance with sanctions.

Canadian flight simulators manufacturer CAE has suspended all services and training to Russian airlines and aircraft operators, in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. CAE has ceased to offer training services to pilots of Russian airlines as well as corporate and cargo operators in its training network. The company has also ceased to sell and service simulators for Russian airlines.

US engine manufacturer GE has temporarily paused support of airlines in Russia to be consistent with the sanctions imposed by the US, the UK and the EU.

Cyprus will alert the EU to its annoyance with the fact that Turkey has not banned Russian aircraft from its airspace, something which also applies to the northern part of Cyprus.

Israel was poised to extend financial guarantees for its airlines to fly into Russia, raising criticism in Kyiv as most Western airlines boycott Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. The US$2 billion guarantee had been set to expire on 09 March 2022.

Air Astana of Kazakhstan has suspended flights from Kazakhstan to a number of cities in Russia. The decision was made for "operational reasons".

ANA Holdings will only raise airfares as a last resort to cover European route changes, its incoming chief executive said, adding that it would focus on belt-tightening first.

Embraer has suspended parts, maintenance, and technical support services for certain customers to comply with the sanctions imposed on Russia, Belarus, and certain regions of Ukraine by laws of jurisdictions to which Embraer is subject. In addition, Embraer informs that there is no immediate concern over the availability of titanium in its supply chain.

Jet2 has decided to suspend flights from the UK to Poland for two months due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

China (surprisingly!) refused to supply aircraft parts to Russian airlines. The government plans to look for opportunities to supply aircraft parts in Turkey, India and other countries.

Global leasing companies staring at an imminent sanctions deadline to repossess more than 400 jets worth almost US$10 billion from Russian airlines have received mostly radio silence as experts warn of legal wrangling that could last a decade. On its side, Russia’s government plans to order local airlines to pay for leased aircraft in rubles throughout 2022 and bar them from returning planes to foreign lessors if the latter cancel the lease.

Over-reaction much, more so for Nippon cargo, as if the three cant take the southern route over India and onto Saudi Arabia, North Africa, then Italy and onwards.

Volga-Dnepr subsidiary ATRAN Cargo Airlines announces the suspension of operations due to lack of spare parts, brought on by the sanctions imposed against the country.

Chinese-owned lessor BOC Aviation (based in Singapore) believes a deadline giving lessors just over two weeks left to end contracts with Russian carriers due to sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine is “unrealistic”.

Although Turkey did not ban flights to Russia, Pegasus Airlines suspends flights to and from Russia from 13 to 27 March 2022, because of uncertainties over the insurance of aircraft bound for Russia.

TUI Group shareholder Russian oligarch Alexey Mordashov shuffled his €1.2 billion holding in the company to a company based in the British Virgin Islands.

Ural Airlines says it will be able to operate flights for about two or three more flights without stopping planes and dismantling aircraft for spare parts.

Russia is discussing the allocation of €175 million from the federal budget to support airlines, amid the backdrop of Western sanctions. The funds can be used to subsidise lending, lease payments, and the current activities of carriers.

Same story for Air Astana: Kazakhstan's flagship carrier, Air Astana, has suspended all flights to Russia and over Russian territory because such flights can no longer be insured, the company said on Friday.

Aeroflot Deputy CEO, Andrei Panov, announced his exit and left the company, citing "personal reasons". He also left the country...

ICAO says any dual registration of foreign-owned aircraft leased by Russian carriers would be inconsistent with parts of a key agreement that sets out core principles for global aviation.

Qazaq Air, which previously cancelled flights to Russia, announced their resumption of flights from 13 March 2022.

And in Russia:
  • Russia is working on sourcing spare parts for aircraft from China and other Asian countries, the transport ministry said, and has not yet decided whether to buy foreign aeroplanes leased by Russian airlines.
  • Russia’s airlines plan to give part of aircraft back to leasing companies, says the Federal Air Transport Agency, adding airlines will decide themselves which jets to return.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law allowing foreign planes leased by Russian airlines to be registered as the airlines’ property.

Irish Aviation Authority has notified the owners of all Russian-operated aeroplanes registered in the country that it has revoked their certificates of airworthiness. Just like Bermuda!

SkyUp of Ukraine is offering its 15 Boeing 737s fleet for wet lease to carriers that do not operate to Russia and Belarus.

UTair has transferred 50 aircraft to the Russian registry, following a notification from the Bermuda aviation authorities to suspend the validity of airworthiness certificates for aircraft registered in Bermuda.
