Bermuda still has hundreds of Russian aircraft on its registry, long after Russian authorities claimed they had re-registered them to the Russian registry. Russia wants Bermuda to withdraw registrations and defer to Moscow, so they can be the regulator for airworthiness. Aircraft cannot legally be registered in more than one jurisdiction.

The Russian Federation’s Transport Ministry issued a statement which referred to how as a result of: “the unilateral cancellation by the Bermuda aviation authorities of the airworthiness certificates of Russian aircraft, the Russian Federation suspended the intergovernmental agreement with Bermuda” removing the island as the airworthiness authority.

A statement Tuesday from the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority said: “Whilst we have not received a request from the Russian authorities to deregister aircraft, we have received a number of letters from Russian air operators requesting that we deregister aircraft formerly operated by them. Our response is consistent in that we will deregister aircraft on request from the owner, in accordance with the relevant Bermuda legislation and procedures.

US Department of the Treasury’s OFAC designated 70 entities to face sanctions, including Rostec, UAC, Tupolev, Irkut, Ilyushin and Ilyushin Finance.

Air Lease chairman Steven Udvar-Hazy says one of the major focuses for SAS is to reduce their A330 and A350 fleet due to the lack of the carrier’s access to Russian airspace.

Aurora is now expected to take delivery of 45 Russian aircraft after 2024, due to sanctions against the country. The SSJ100, IL114-300, L410 and Baikal will be supplied by the State Transport Leasing Company.

Aeroflot is among the state-controlled airlines that are stripping jetliners to secure spare parts they can no longer buy abroad because of Western sanctions. At least one SSJ100 and an A350, both operated by the carrier, are currently grounded and being disassembled.
