Post by Vic Diesel »

Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) has received an official notification from insurance companies to terminate the insurance of aircraft for flights in the airspace of Ukraine. In this regard, UIA, at the request of lessors, sends 5 Boeing 737-800 aircraft to Spain while retaining other aircraft in the company's fleet. In addition, 2 aircraft of the airline are sent for scheduled engine maintenance in Belgrade.

Ukrainian low-cost airline SkyUp has temporarily stopped selling tickets for flights from 14-16 February 2022, due to tensions between the US and Russia. The carrier also cannot ignore the demands of lessors, who have recalled some aircraft.

Ukraine has allocated €525 million to guarantee the continuation of flights to and from the country, as fears of flying over its airspace led some airlines to scrap or divert flights.

Bees Airline of Ukraine was forced to send all its planes abroad because of increased military risks, mirroring similar action by two other carriers following a build-up of Russian forces on the Ukrainian border.

Ukraine International Airlines has managed to work out a compromise position in the process of negotiations with insurance companies and with the consent of lessors. UIA has decided to temporarily reduce the number of aircraft to 13 as two more aircraft were sent to Spain for safekeeping. Flights continue to be operated according to the current schedule.

MoL says airlines have a duty to fly to Ukraine as long as there are no missiles flying around. I tend to agree with him on this one.

Unfortunately the missiles ARE flying around now, as Russia launched a full-scale invasion into its neighboring country. With the Russian aggressors seemingly targeting Ukrainian ai-defense capabilities, parts of Ukraine were declared to an "active condlict zone".

PS: Shouldn't the topic be re-named into "Russian invasion of Ukraine affecting civilian aviation"?

Well, isn't this only a logical and predictable continuation of the "Ukraine Crisis" ?

I do pity the population suffering from this political game.

Flightradar24 is down.

I suspect it's being DDOS'd by the Russians so we can't see the traffic above Ukraine.

Can someone confirm ?

I suspect the Russian will put their transponders off prior to launching an attack ;)

Although there were some rumours that the An-225 Mriya had been damaged during the Russian attacks on Hostomel Airport a captain from Antonov Airlines has stated that this is NOT the case. The airport has been seized by Russian Forces, but the aircraft is intact.

Now the UK has banned all Russian aircraft are banned from its airspace. This is for all aircraft that are "owned, chartered or operated by a person connected with russia, or which are registered in russia."

Some europeans are playing with fire
The siberian route is priceless.
British airlines already lost it
At the current oil price, the impact can be extremely serious

Let's summarise :

The UK has banned Russia from its airspace.
Response : Russia has banned UK registered aircraft from entering into its airspace.

Poland has closed its airspace to Russian airlines, LOT has stopped flying to Russia (but it might be a problem for intercontinental airlines).

Delta has stopped its codeshare partnership with Aeroflot.

HiSky flies from Iasi instead of Chisinau.

The Moldovian airspace is currently closed until early 4 March 2022.

Of course : SkyUp has a very limited schedule, UIA has stopped flying, Ryanair and Wizz Air have suspended their operations there. Air Moldova also stopped flying, FlyOne has stopped flying from and to Chisinau as well.

The Siberian route is also generating a lot of money for Russia! They have a small economy and can’t afford to close the route completely.
