For the many under us who speak Catalan here is the news from Catalan TV:
Un avió causa un ensurt a l'aeroport del Prat en sortir de la pista quan hi ha aterrat
Probably the KLM captain missed because he couldn't pronounce the name of that airport.... El Prat de Llobregat, El Prat International Airport, aka El Prat is the second largest airport of Spain. The airport IATA Airport Code is BCN.
2 Runways, both with aircraft size max: B747:
Runway 1: Heading 07/25, 3,353m
Runway 2: Heading 02/20, 2,720m
And before you ask me, here is the weather at that time:
Temperature: 14.0 °C
Dew Point :11.0 °C
Humidity :82%
Pressure :1018 hPa
Visibility :10.0 kilometers
Wind Direction :SW
Wind Speed : about 13.0 km/h
Gust Speed :N/A
Precipitation :N/A
Events :N/A
Conditions: Mostly Cloudy
This GEN indicates that it would be probably a mechanical failure (and not a pronunciation error LLLLlobregat...)
And nobody got hurt.
You may repeat that to zoom in more.
This is the source I based my info on Jan.janhuub wrote:It has 3 runways now, 07R/25L and 07L/25R and 02/20. Just like Brussels Jan
It is a long time, I did go that way. Please check it by this In this link goto: Planos de aeropuertos and select Barcelona
Have also a look at this: BCN / LEBL and also this link El Prat
When you click 2X in, you zoom in on the airport, and what do we see? You may repeat that to zoom in more.
Didn't know about it either. A lot of construction work going on over there.
Landed on the 07R last Thursday.
Normally you shoudl find all info here: http://ais.aena.es/ but can't open it right now, it's going very slow.

In 1998, the airport was voted Europe’s best.
The airport had 21 million passengers passing through in 2002, compared with just ten million in 1992, the year of the Barcelona Olympics.
The airport consists of three terminals, A for international departures and arrivals, B for national and some EC flights, and C for the Puente Aereo or shuttle flights to and from Madrid and other major Spanish cities.
And I read this:
A third runway and a new offloading area have been planned for 2006, to cater for the increasing volume of air traffic.
Have they been quick?
Notice BCN had been and still is trouble free since 1970, July 3, when a british charter Dan-Air Comet jet crashed into the sea while coming in for a landing at Barcelona; 112 dead. Nothing to do with BCN Airport, actually...
For the amigos, who speake the Spanish: Lima Ecoon Nueva pista LEBL Its starts in BCN in Spanish, but later in English....
We had a tread on that some weeks ago.

Passenger experience
I met someone today who was on that flight. Apparently the aircraft landed normally but shortly after touchdown, there was a report and the aircraft began to swing one way and the other, eventually running off the runway into the sandtrap. Undercarriage was buried in the sand. He was able to walk off the wing onto the ground from the overwing exit. Could have been a lot worse as there's a deep drainage gully a few metres away - fotunately plane stopped short of that.
No injuries.

Re: Passenger experience
A mechanical failure: brake problem? As I tried earlier Sunday, see higher: This GEN indicates that it would be probably a mechanical failure.clr0901 wrote:...Apparently the aircraft landed normally but shortly after touchdown, there was a report and the aircraft began to swing one way and the other, eventually running off the runway into the sandtrap. Things that can happen, as bird strike is also a hazard.
In these cases, one wishes (s)he is in the hands of a well trained crew.
