What to say. There is a very large room for improvement for Africa, reforms are needed:
Liberalization of the sky to have more competition and lower prices
Better management of airlines
Improve airport infrastructure
Sustainable economic growth by developing all sectors and creating jobs
Improve the movement of goods (more trade between African countries) and people between African countries (make an African Schengen)
etc ...
Africa will be able to partly reduce the gap with the other continents.
I often take the example of what Asians do with the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Open Sky Agreement / Policy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASEAN_Sin ... ion_Market. Ok there are only 10 countries and all is not perfect, but Africa should be inspired by it.
Population of Africa is 1 billion of people, but:
An average load factor of 71%.
A negative income per passenger (not the worst if we take the data from Latin America and the Middle East ... for 2019). For 2020 with the covid19 crisis, Africa will be last.
Ethiopian has almost the same number of planes as KLM (excluding Transavia and KLM City Hopper) carries only 12,000,000 passengers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KLM)
RwandAir, which has the same number of planes as Croatia Airlines, only carries 1,170,000 passengers, compared to 2,179,000 passengers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croatia_Airlines)
etc ...
Here are some interesting data
