The "x" stands for any one of a number of implementations:

H=HighDataRate,
S=Symmetric,
SH=SinglePair-HighDataRate,
V=VeryHighDataRate,
RA=RateAdaptive.
ADSL is a transmission technology that provides "push" speeds (from the user onto the Internet) of 16-640 Kilobits per second (Kb/s) in the upstream direction and "pull" speeds (from the Internet to the user) ranging from 1Mb/s upto a phenomenal 9Mb/s in the downstream direction - all over existing copper telephone lines.
