Cathay Pacific plans to relocate some Hong Kong-based pilots to Los Angeles for up to four months, to avoid quarantine requirements for aircrew.

Croatia Airlines plans to further cut its costs and implement its post-Covid strategy in 2022.

Nigeria will restrict airlines coming from Canada, the UK and Saudi Arabia into the country, in order to reciprocate restricted flights from Nigeria into those countries over health rules.

Western Australia regional government will open its domestic and international borders on 05 February 2022.

Air Europa may secure a state guarantee for the continuity of its operations as the Ministry of Transport said the airline is a strategic company for Spain due to its importance for the aviation and tourism sectors.

American Airlines is planning to hire 18,000 workers in 2022, on top of thousands of new employees this year to cater to a rebound in travel.

Jetstar returns to the skies in Auckland, initially flying 85 return flights per week to four destinations from Auckland to Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown.

Virgin Australia has restarted international flights, with daily Fiji services. Virgin is scheduled to expand its international network over the coming months, with the resumption of services between Melbourne and Brisbane and Fiji, before returning to Bali and Queenstown, in 2022.

EU adopted an extension to the slot relief rules of the 2022 summer scheduling season, running from 28 March 2022 until 29 October 2022. Airlines will only have to use 64% to retain historic rights in those slots.

UK airlines called on the government to provide economic support for the battered sector, as new travel rules were imposed to fight off the new omicron variant.

British Airways cancelled all UK flights to Bangkok until October 2022 due to the continuing pandemic.

Japan Airlines believes an anticipated recovery for international flights may be delayed due to the ongoing pandemic.

Airbus sees signs that airlines are re-emerging from the crisis, although the recovery for now focuses on short routes, and the new variant may imply new restrictions.

China’s CAA said it will end previous passenger-to-cargo flights, with cabins now restricted to transporting anti-epidemic items. The new regulations also prohibit cabin seats to be removed to increase cargo space.

Air New Zealand has cancelled about 120 flights after the government announced there would be a six-week delay to the phased reopening of international borders.

Air Serbia expects to return to pre-pandemic levels by 2023, as its passenger performance and the average cabin occupancy index outpaced the industry average in Europe during 2021.

Emirates announced that flights from multiple destinations had been suspended until further notice. They include Angola, Guinea, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Pacific Coastal Airlines of Canada has suspended operations for two days due to the coronavirus at its operational control centre at Vancouver International Airport. None of the flights scheduled for 02-03 January 2022 will go ahead.

Virgin Australia to reduce capacity across its network by around 25% for the rest of January and for February 2022 due to reduced travel demand and staff being required to isolate.

Macau has announced a two-week ban on any inbound passenger flights from outside of China after continued health issues.

AAPA (the Association of Asia-Pacific Airlines) reports overall volumes to remain significantly depressed as the 1.6 million international passengers carried by the region’s airlines in November 2021 was just 5.2% of the corresponding pre-pandemic month in 2019. RPKs averaged 7.1% of 2019 levels, and ASKs was 16.6% of the same month in 2019, with the international PLF averaging 34.1% for the month.

Air Canada will be suspending some flights to sun destinations from 24 January until 30 April 2022.

Air Greenland has suspended ticket sales due to health issues affecting staff, while getting authorisation to fly DHC8 without a flight attendant.

US airlines say China has blocked more than a dozen recent and future flights from entering the country, which has been tightening already-strict COVID-19 travel restrictions.

Qantas and subsidiary Jetstar are adjusting flying levels. The Group now expects domestic capacity for 3Q FY22 to be at around 70% of pre-COVID levels, down from the 102% that had been planned. The Group’s total international capacity for the same period will fall from 30% to around 20% of pre-COVID levels.

Kenya has suspended all inbound and transit passenger flights from the UAE for seven days from 10 January 2022, in order to reciprocate a ban on Kenyan passenger flights to UAE.

Israel’s three major airlines will receive US$100 million from the government to deal with the latest variant. El Al, Israir and Arkia will receive convertible bonds, along with fuel and maintenance expenses.

Qantas Group has reviewed its domestic capacity settings given the decision by the Western Australian government to indefinitely delay reopening its borders. Also, the timing to reinstate the Perth – London route from late March 2022, is under review.

Qantas will suspend all flights to Honolulu over the next two months as the airline trims its schedule and reduces the capacity to better match travel demand.

US DOT is suspending 44 flights from the US to China by four Chinese airlines, in retaliation for Beijing cancelling the same number of flights on American carriers citing precautions against Covid-19.
