I think Jo'Burg is one of the longest not sure on the length. With the elevation being so high. Can't provide any more datails i'm afraid!

Cape Canaveral has a 4,500 m runway to enable the space shuttle to land safely. At JNB 03L/21R makes 4,418m. Call it a tie?

Nice try, but noting beats Edwards AFB, Mojave Desert, CA.

"The main Edwards concrete runway is located next to Rogers Dry Lake and combining this runway's 15,000 foot length with a 9,000 foot lakebed overrun gives pilots with an inflight emergency one of the longest and safest runways anywhere in the world."

And unofficially, there's still Groom Lake AFB, Nevado (also known as Area 51) wich even has a longer runway.

15000 ft still is less than the 16404ft MiStEr-T said, not counting the lake 'overrun' though....

If I'm informed correctly, Denver (DEN - USA) has also a very long (the newest of DEN) runway.

That's very looooooooooong. I guess no reverse is needed there!

No. They even don't use the brakes. They let the headwind stop the plane

This unique runway (5100 m long, 105 m wide) was put into operation in 1983 for ground and flight tests.

Since the 1970s, runway length requirements have actually decreased, and the takeoff and climb performance of civilian aircraft has improved substantially.

The longest runway in North America was dedicated June 23, 2003 in a ceremony at Denver International Airport. (I didn't see that one ) The runway measures 16,000 feet long and 200 feet wide.
Upington Airport, located in the Northern Cape, boasts a 4 900 metre long runway, the longest in the African continent. Long enough to land a space shuttle, the runway was built in 1975 in a record seven months.
Runway 1: Heading 17/35, 4,900m (16,076ft), Load: LCN 74.
Upington was chosen because of its favourable height above sea level, global position and availability of land.
Upington Airport (UTN/FAUP) Elevation 850m (2,788ft) was opened in 1968 as Pierre van Ryneveld Airport.
From August 1976 to December 1996, SAA made use of Upington as a refuelling station for two weekly scheduled Boeing 747 flights to London and Zurich.
And that is how I know that, because I was in one of those 747's and I can tell you it took awful long time before it rotated.
The 667km between CPT and UTN were too much for a non-stop full load 747 in that time, anyway the UTN-LHR run was 9100km, but SAL/SAA had to make a wide detour over international waters, so I ignore how much km were flown, then.
That was my longest flight in the early 80's. After that I had longer ones, as to BKK and non-stop to TYO (9464km). I exceeded the 10000km with a LHR-SIN of about 11000km.
And Changi Airport (SIN/WSSS) has 2 equally long runways of 4000m, 300m > (BKK/VTBD) and 100m > LHR.

What is the identifier and runway length of the airport with the highest airport elevation?
JNB Runway 1: Heading 03L/21R, 4,418m, Elevation 1,694m is higher than KTM. But Paro in Bhutan is 2236m high, and when landing there you'll understand why the airline and the airport are Drukair!
NBO Runway 1: Heading 06/24, 4,117m (13,507ft) is longer.
ADD Runway 1: Heading 07/25, 3,700m (12,139ft), is higher: Elevation 2,325m.
LPB Runway 1: Heading 10/28, 4,000m (13,123ft) is the highest airport I was in: Elevation 4,058m

What is the identifier and runway length of the airport with the lowest airport elevation?
SPL is Elevation -5m (-16ft), and Runway 3: Heading 06/24, 3,500m (11,482ft)
Image
The lowest airport I went (I must say walked, because I did not fly in, but I was there - remember my tour, where I met the lady from Tienen behind the bar?) was in Death Valley in California (-85m) only 87 nautical miles from LAS: Furnace Creek Airport is Elevation: (minus)-211ft -64 m (estimated), longest paved runway there 3065ft.

If you havent forgotten, Edward AFB isnt realy much of anything.... i mean yea 15,000 ft + 9,000 ft cushion is cool, but thats what 24,000 ft total? you are all forgetting, back in the 1960's
Area 51's runway was 6 miles. Thats 31,680 ft of runway space. U can't overlook that simple fact. Yea, i know they tore it up and made new runwayz, but still, it did exist in the past, and was the longest runway of its time so.

Many highways in Cuba were built wide enough for planes to land so if we find a straight 10km stretch of road, Fidel Castro may be the host of the world's longest runway ;-)

Might be difficult landing amongst the odd car and cyclists in the countryside but this was strategically decided when the roads were built when Cuba was in the cold war.

The same in Sweden...

Itcould happen that a traffic light on the highway made you stop, a Draken landed, and after it left the highway the traffic light turned green again...
