747 at EBBR
Maybe a stupid question but...does a 747 fits at Pier A?
Or does any wide-body aircraft fits at these gates?
The US carriers are always at B-gates and the A 330's of SNBA too.
SQ 747 which flew at BRU was also at B-gates.
Was Pier A designed for smaller carriers only?
greetz

The A-pier is dedicated for a flights to Schengen-countries, which results in the fact that mostly smaller a/c are used (a 747 for bru-ams would be rather a waste of money and time).
I don't think it would be a problem to dock a 747 at the a-pier. The largest a/c parked there are the 767 and the a300 so far.
If memory serves well, there might even have been a OA A340, but not sure about that one.

When PanAm flew the first 747 to BRU, it was on a JFK-AMS-BRU-AMS-JFK route. And PanAm had traffic rights on BRU-AMS.744rules wrote:A 747 for bru-ams would be rather a waste of money and time.
Many people at that time took the BRU-AMS trip just to try the 747 without flying transatlantic.
Later, Sabena also flew BRU-LGW with a 747 as part of its BRU-LGW-ATL route, codeshared with defunct BCal.

You're very close! Six of the contact gates are designated to receive jumbojets or other big aircrafts.Jense wrote:on the A-pier, there are 5 (I think 5) gates designed for the 747 or other heavies.
You're right! The six gates for widebodies are located on the south side of Pier A because there isn't enough space on the north side.moons wrote:But I think that the North side has a smaller space, isn't it? If you park a 747, wouldn't that cause problems for the aircrafts who pass behind it?
Is there enough space for another a/c to taxi behind it ?

I remembered that a few weeks ago the Iberia A340-300 was standing at terminal A gate A53 - 153L

Yes, I saw this aircraft standing there too. It was on a sunday morning while I was walking to our dispatch. I thought I was dreaming. Never saw an A340 of Iberia berore at Brussels.luchtzak wrote:I remembered that a few weeks ago the Iberia A340-300 was standing at terminal A gate A53 - 153L

Somebody told me that this can happen once in a while. Iberia only sold tickets on this aircraft if it was a A320. There were only around 80 passengers on this A340 flying that day to Madrid. This only happens once a new captain gets released. Before operating normally like captain they have to do a certain amount of landings. So the companys puts the aircraft on small routs, like BRU-MAD, so the fresh captain gets his number of landings and take-offs.
This also happened quit frequently with Sabena, where an A340 would fly on the European routs.
Sorry guys, I was in Germany for the WRC so I could not answer immediatly.
In theory there is no problem to park a 747 at pier-A. The only possible stands are 145L, 149L, 153L, 157L, 165L, 169L.
But, there is always a but here in BRU, the servicedrive behind the stands is not painted very well IMO. When the 747 is at the stand, the tail is around 10 meters over the servicedrive.
It's possible but it's not easy.
