Re: Qatar Airways news
The end of a very long story ? First plan to sell RwandAir stakes started in 2006, with SN Brussels Airlines, Meridiania, then Etihad and Ethiopian Airlines
Some rumors in Rwanda say that the delay of the delivery of the RwandAir A330Neo (planned to be delivered early 2019) is linked to the Qatar Airways RwandAir deals. Qatar will also take part into the project of the brand new Kigali Airport.
Qatar Airways currently serves Kigali, every day, with a B787, and they have a weekly cargo service operated by an A330F
Interisting to see how gulf states are heavily investing in Rwanda:
Nexus (Saudi Arabia) has opened a Flight Operations Services base, years ago and they have signed a parnetship with Akagera Aviation (Rwanda) to open the first fixed aircraft wings air school in Rwanda
NAS Aviation (Kuwait) opened its 1st ever loungue in Africa at Kigali Airport. They have opened a second one at Kigali Airport, only used by RwandAir
An UAE company (i forgot the name) has also helped RwandAir
Qatar banks on RwandAir deal to expand in Africa
Rwanda is in the process of selling shares in the national carrier RwandAir to Qatar Airways, in a deal that is expected to shake up the country’s aviation industry and beyond.
Aviation experts say the move by Qatar to buy shares in RwandAir could enable it to solidify its presence in the African market given its current woes with its Gulf neighbours.

Re: Qatar Airways news
Statement of the Government of Rwanda
While waiting to buy RwandAir ... Qatar Airways serves Kigali, once a day, in B787-8. In 2014, i flown from Paris to Kigali via Doha. The Doha Kigali flight was operated by the A320. Almost 7h flight (commercial stopover in Uganda), my record in narrowbody aircraft There is also a flight per week, A330F Qatar Airways Cargo.
Qatar takes Majority Stake in Rwanda’s New International Airport
09.12.2019
Kigali, 9 December 2019 - The Government of Rwanda and Qatar Airways today concluded an investment partnership for Rwanda’s new international airport. The partnership features three agreements to build, own, and operate the state-of-the-art facility.
Qatar Airways has agreed to take a 60% stake in the project, which as a whole is valued at around $1.3 billion.
The new airport is being redesigned to accommodate seven million passengers per year, with a second phase for 14 million passengers a year expected to start by 2032.
The agreements signed today mark a key milestone in the development of Rwanda’s vibrant aviation sector, in the context of the excellent bilateral relationship between Qatar and Rwanda.

Re: Qatar Airways news
This is a blow to European airlines: with a majority stake, QR may run the airport as it wants. How will European airlines (SN, KL, ...) react? I hope there is a CAA to regulate airports and airlines and make sure the foreign airlines get a fair deal.rwandan-flyer wrote: ↑09 Dec 2019, 21:30 Qatar takes Majority Stake in Rwanda’s New International Airport
With regard to the construction of the airport, one may hope that the rights (and the lives) of the workers will be better protected than during the construction of the FIFA World Cup stadiums in Qatar.

Re: Qatar Airways news
Well like with RwandAir (Ethiopian, Etihad, Brussels Airlines in 2000s), Rwanda Gov had a talks with several countries or companies about the New Bugesera Airport. I remmember they had talks with Aéroport de Lyon, the company that owns Lyons Bron and Lyon St Exupéry Airports.
I think for some companies, the return on investment was not big. Rwanda market is growing quickly, but it's not yet a big market, such as Kenya, Nigeria or South Africa.
For 2036: Many of the fastest-growing markets are achieving a compound growth rate of more than 7.2% per year, meaning their market will double in size each decade. Most of these markets are in Africa, including: Sierra Leone, Benin, Mali, Rwanda, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Senegal, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, Malawi, Chad, Gambia and Mozambique. https://www.iata.org/pressroom/pr/Pages ... 24-01.aspx
I think that Qatar is aslo looking new friends in the world, due to the blockade Middle East (they have since also some bad relations with some countries in Africa) and the mistrust in Europe: suspicion of supporting terrorism and like you say, the workers rights, during the the construction of the FIFA World Cup stadiums in Qatar
Rwanda is working well (they need to make more changes on human rights, for me), but the country needs money for its huge infrastructure projects, in transport, tourism, housing.

Strangely enough, on this picture showing the sponsorship of Rwanda for Arsenal, the recommendation is to fly Emirates to visit Rwanda

Re: Qatar Airways news
Hmm impressive. Knowing that they started to fly to Waw at the end of 2012 with an A320. In 2016 they changed it into the A330 and in 2017 they are double daily, one A330 and one A320.
So, to fly not that long it is impressive that they have already this figure. Load factor must be good

Re: Qatar Airways news
LATAM and Qatar Airways have announced new codeshare: https://www.routesonline.com/news/38/ai ... -dec-2019/
Surprised to see LATAM Brasil code to Kigali (Rwanda).
I'm doing a little out of debate, well it's not really one. Rwanda is not the biggest market in Africa, but there are quite a few companies which serve Kigali, via code shares. I was wondering from what criteria do companies decide to make code share on a destination? Sorry for the list, but it was to show the diversity of code share on Rwanda, which is important for this market.
Some companies started with code share, before serving themselves Kigali (KLM, Turkish Airlines and Egyptair), RwandAir serves India, Royal Air Maroc planned to come to Kigali. There have often been line projects between Rwanda and Frankfurt, mainly with RwandAir, but who knows may be possible with Lufthansa, I am even thinking of an Air France return to Rwanda, the Kagame and Macron relations (France & Rwanda) are good to see very good, unique case since the genocide of 1994. South African no longer serves Rwanda.
Africa:
Egyptair (Addis Ababa-Kigali, operated by Ethiopian Airlines)
RwandAir (Addis Ababa-Kigali, operated by Ethiopian Airlines)
South African Airways (Johannesburg-Kigali, operated by RwandAir)
PrecisionAir Tanzania (Kilimanjaro-Kigali, operated by RwandAir)
RwandAir (Brussels-Kigali, operated by SN)
Royal Air Maroc (Doha-Kigali, operated by Qatar Airways)
Kenya Airways (Amsterdam-Kigali, operated by KLM, to be verified)
RwandAir (Kigali-Istanbul, operated by Turkish Airlines)
ProFlight Zambia (Lusaka-Johannesburg, operated by RwandAir)
America:
United Airlines (Brussels-Kigali, operated by Brussels Airlines)
Delta Airlines (Amsterdam-Kigali, operated by KLM)
LATAM (Doha-Kigali, operated by Qatar Airways)
Air Canada (Brussels-Kigali, operated by SN)
Asia
Singapore Airlines (Addis Ababa-Kigali, operated by Ethiopian Airlines)
Air India (Addis Ababa-Kigali, operated by Ethiopian Airlines)
Etihad Airways (Nairobi-Kigali, operated by Kenya Airways)
