Thunderstorms in Europe.

Post by flyingcow »

Ok, maybe this is quite a stupid question  but I want to ask all of you that live in Europe if your thunderstorms are similar to the ones that we have in the American continent. Let me explain, thunderstorms are very familiar in places that are very humid and have hot weather, also they are very popular in the mountains were hot meets cold and the explosion begins. Europe is not very hot, or at least almost most of it is rather cold, so I was just wondering if you also have this GREAT BIG thunderstorms in the middle of the day in the summer. Along the gulf coast of the USA and also along almost all Mexico we have huge thunderstorms in this season exactly in the middle of the day.....how about England, Belgium, France, etc?

Very rare in Greece, eventhough the weather is hot and we have a lot of mountains. And certainly not as the ones you get. (Never experienced any thunderstorm on any flight. I guess Im lucky). :)

I remember the summer of 2003 when we flew back from Cuba to Holland on Martinair. As the evening did go by a severe thunderstorm came over the airport. As I wanted to board the aircraft through the jet way a lightning struck our aircraft (on the ground) and being it so close (luckily I was inside the terminal) it scared the shit out of me and the other people who where boarding the flight. We walked into the jet way which was leaking drops everywhere, as you all possibly know water and electricity don't cope to well in combination, we where send back to the terminal by the cabin crew.

Having already some delay I expected it to be a long night at the terminal but after a couple of minutes we where allowed to board the aircraft. The pilot came on the speaker and told us that we would wait until the thunderstorm passed by. Having watched "Final Destination" just before we left on holiday, I looked out the window and the scene was exactly the same. It was dark, heavy rain and thunderstorm. When I touched the metal part of my seatbelt I could feel some very low electricity. It did me think twice to go to the bathroom because I didn't want to electrocute some "Body Parts" (You know), but everything was all right though.

We finally pushed back when the thunderstorm was far enough away and on take off and climbing towards our cruising altitude it was a spectacular view to see the thunderstorm roaring in the distance.
But I realize I did go off-topic here, but the thunderstorms I have experienced in Holland, unless one is in the middle of it, are smaller when compared to the ones I have encountered in Cuba, which will (probably) represent the ones throughout the Caribbean.

Well I've been a few times to the US (westcoast and Fl) . And the ones in the US are much bigger and more powerfull in my opinion. I haven't seen such thunderstorms in here!

Hi,

As far as I remember Belgium had only one really severe tornado in it's (modern) history and that one dates from June 25th 1967 when the town of Oostmalle (near Antwerp) was partly destroyed. Last tornadoreport in Belgium dates form September 2000. While in America you have multiple severe tornadoes each year... 8O (
Let's say on average we have 1 or two thunderstorms per year that to American standards could be called severe. Usually we just have showers with the occasional thunder and some small hail after a hot summerday (yes sometimes it's even hot in Belgium  although this years' summer sucks up till now). Now that I think of it, weather reports here in Belgium predict rather severe thunderstorms for this weekend? Perhaps you could come over?
I would definately want to come over to Tornado Alley to do some stormchasing, it's one of my dreams...

grtz,

stroman
