Off-topic, but there is a nice video online about "Tram 15" : http://www.sonuma.be/archive/le-tram-15 ... atlantique
Thank you Andorra for this nice video. Brings back memories...
Actually I thought it was Capt Jaspis who first referred to this Tram 15. But of course he was such a "presence" at SN that a lot of these quotes have his name tagged to.

Man, that was not yesterday.
I was a junior engineer back then when I had to ask him for his experienced comments and inputs on the PAPI then under development. The answer came out loud and clear "A real pilot doesn't need all this to make a good landing!".
I think the ol'man must be flying high above the clouds now, but what a personnality !.

Cheers.

The year ended with 46 deliveries for the 787 and 31 748's were delivered. So with 77 deliveries for both together, that's right in the middle of their planned 70-85 deliveries.

Cargolux plans to delay B747-8F deliveries

Cargolux (CV) interim Chief Executive Officer Richard Forson has confirmed that the cargo carrier is currently in talks with Boeing to possibly delay delivery positions for the remaining seven B747-8(F) freighters it has on order.

Cargolux expects to take delivery of two or three additional B747-8Fs later this year bringing its B747-8 fleet to eight or nine aircraft. It hopes to get more flexibility regarding the next four to five deliveries.

I also heard somewhere that after all the 748 production slots have been filled for 2013, Boeing has announced that many slots are still empty in 2014. The 748 programme does not seem to be a resounding success!

Indeed, production is filled up for 2013, but if they don't sell enough 748's this year, they'll have to reduce production or build unsold aircraft in 2014.
It's nothing new that the 748 isn't a succes, especially the pax-version is a failure. The 748F could do quite well, even in the comming years, but the current economic situation (all over the world, amounts of air cargo are decreasing) isn't really attractive for new orders.

Boeing faces B747 production delay without vital fuselage part

Boeing is facing a potentially costly delay to the production of at least one of its B747 aircraft unless vital equipment is shipped to its Washington state assembly plant in the next few days. Boeing has hired Ukrainian-based cargo carrier Antonov Airlines to ship an outsized Boeing 747 fuselage panel and supporting equipment from Fort Worth, where the panel is produced, to its factory in Everett, Washington.

As a foreign-based carrier, Antonov has had to file an emergency exemption request with the Department of Transportation yesterday (March 11) for clearance to fly a special charter between the two cities on or around March 13 to avoid Boeing incurring “severe financial penalties”.

Measuring 679” x 220” and weighing approximately 16,000Ibs, the panel is too large and heavy for any US air freighter to ship, forcing the US manufacturer to hire an Antonov An-124, the world’s largest cargo plane to ship it.

Either this news is not that new, or it's the second time in a few weeks time. As I read about some shipments by Antonov Airlines for the 748 production (after some panels that were already delivered, were damaged). There were also pictures of them being unloaded. So I don't know if this is new, or not...it looks new tough.

If they need the world's largest cargo plane, it must be the An-225 Mriya .

Antonov cleared for special Boeing charter

The US Department of Transportation (DoT) has given the go ahead to a last minute air charter flight by Antonov Airlines AN-124 to deliver a vital B747 fuselage part to its Everett, Washington production plant.
Antonov's request for an emergency exemption on Monday to allow it to fly a one off charter flight between Fort Worth, Texas and Everett was cleared by the DOT yesterday (March 12), giving the Ukrainian cargo carrier the green light to carry out the flight immediately.

So this is indeed new. Well than I wonder what they are doing with those panels overthere at Everett, as something very similar has happened some weeks (may be months already?) ago as well.

Probably due to poor sales, Boeing has announced that it will cut the 747-8 production rate from 2 aeroplanes per month to 1.75 a month. The first affected delivery is scheduled in early 2014.

Further bad news for Boeing: they announced the cancellation of the orders for five B747-8s. No customer or model has been specified, but if they are from one customer, the list of suspects is very short.

Edit: Dubai Aerospace Enterprise cancelled the order for the five last 747-8Fs it had on order.

These were intended for Emirates SkyCargo (the original EK order was moved to DAE and eventually the amount of aircraft on order was decreased until the 5 that were left). Emirates SkyCargo seems to focus on the 777F of which they have some on order.

Sad news for Boeing, but not unexpected as EK SkyCargo already pointed out the 777F would be the core of their fleet. It's a fact that the whole cargo sector is in very bad shape and there is only little to no recovery (part of the air cargo sector is permanently lost to the sea freight sector because of the crisis, companies adjusted their supply chain to cope with the slower sea transportation and above all...it's much cheaper once they are past the transition period). Of course there's still a market, for high value density products, but the sector is still in trouble. Sales for the A332F and 777F are not good either. No big problem for them as the cargo versions are just a nice addition to the whole program. But the 748 basicly lives on the cargo version, so let's hope the market improves as the 748F is unique in it's class. So the problem is not the competition, neither the capabilities of the aircraft (especially the more recent ones and the future improved ones), the problem is the cargo market.

Here’s some exciting news about the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental, as the aircraft has successfully completed its first test flight was a package of performance improvements, including the all-important enhanced GE engines.

With Boeing Flight Test and Evaluation Captain Kirk Vining and Chief Pilot Capt. Mark Feuerstein at the controls, the airplane took off from Paine Field in Everett, Wash. at 1:30 p.m. local time and landed at Boeing Field in Seattle approximately four hours later.

A new Cargolux 748F (LX-VCI) has been delivered and flown straight to Marana Airpark in Arizona for storage. Two other 748Fs (one from Air Bridge Cargo and one from Nippon Cargo Airlines) are also stored in Marana.

In addition, there are many deferrals, changes of owners, re-registration from a final customer to a Boeing registration.

Already too many 748Fs on the market? The freight market seems to be in doldrums. And it affects, not only Boeing, but also Airbus with the A330-200F. The Boeing 777F programme has not seen any cancellations, but there have been requests for a few deferrals.

There a a few more slots reserved for 748 and 787 for storage at Pinal Airpark, at this moment, they can store a lot more, so that makes me curious about how many and which ones will join them at MZJ

There's an interesting article in Bloomberg Businessweek (1st August 2013):

Boeing is buying up older 747's to push sales for the 747-8:

They are even buying A340s in order to sell 747-8s. A sign that sales are very bad.
