30.000feet plane spotting?

Post by lumumba »

Hi everybody.
I was wondering if other poeple where also dooing this.
With a good binocular with stabilazer jou can look very good to overfliyng planes.
The most you see over BRU is or BA or LH east west.
And sas norht south.
But last week I also saw the 343-500 from Emirates very nice.
For sure the jumbos era the most nice to see.
Regards
Patrice

Yes, I also do this. I placed my desk under the window room so that i can watch some overflying planes when getting bored. Indeed, early in the morning, you can see much LH's coming back from North-American destinations (west-east). Yesterday, I saw an Emirates A343, I think heading to LHR.

This morning, I saw for example a Polar Air Cargo 742F. Somebody has an idea of the heading? Was it LGG? It was around 10u30. And somebody has the reg, if I'm right?

I sometime take my telescope (Skywatcher 102/500) outside to watch the planes flying over. I mostly see LH. This scope I bought for viewing at the stars and planets at night, but it is also great for viewing during the day, it gives crisp images of aircrafts. Plus if I attach my camera behind it can be used a a 510 mm fixed zoom ;-) nice isn't it?
Next time I'll take it outside to watch, I'll try to make a log of wat planes I saw.

PS/ this is the scope > http://www.skywatchertelescope.com/1025.html

Another airline I see quite often cruising above Belgium, is Ryanair. Most of them will fly to Hahn, I presume?

SilverJet,

Sounds cool! How much did you paid for your scope? A few days ago I was thinking about it, too spot planes with my camera (wich I don't have for now  ) attached (spelling?) too a scope!

@ Bottie : cool pictures

I mostly see Lufthansa, British Airways, Easyjet, Emirates and sometimes Tupolev's and stuf.

Kind Regards,
Rutger

Rutger, (aka Airbus_fan)

This telescope I bought in Hasselt (Lichtenknecker optics) for 381 €. The main reason for buying it was astronomy of course ;-) But it can be useful to watch aircraft at +30.000ft too. I love this scope !

Rutger could you send me your MSN again, I have a new MSNadres

I'm an overflight spotter too!

If you have some knowledge about routings etc, you can easily tie up several aircraft with ACARS logs posted on the web.

For example: the EK A345 mentioned by Glider is EK15/EK16 to LGW (comes over to LGW around noon and flies back over Belgium across 3.30pm). This flight is always operated by an A345, and exceptionally by one of their A343's (like today).

Regulars are:
x OS A330 to US/Canada
x KU to LHR
x EK to LHR/LGW/BHX/MAN
x JL to/from CDG
x BA to/from LHR (especially to/from Asia)
x BG to/from LHR
x LY to/from LHR
x TK from IST to LHR/America and back
x GF to/from LHR
x RJ to/from LHR and America
x ...

Hi Frederic,
Do you also take photo's from those aircraft? Because I have a 1000mm lens and even with this lens the results are poor from the ground.
From the cockpit I need to zoom in somethimes 8x (digital) to get a nice pic. for planes with 2000ft spacing.(here I use a digital camera)

Hi JC,

Nope, no pictures. I log the aircraft of which I know I will be able to tie up the reg... Like this, I've seen the whole active EK A345 fleet for example.

Hi Patrice,

This is a part of an ACARS log (copyright Jonathan Simmons):

F-GSPI (B772 AFR) 1032 20040519 AF0028 (LFPG-KIAD)
F-GSPF (B772 AFR) 0654 20040519 AF0033 (KIAH-LFPG)

With a scanner and the necessary software, you are able to trace flights. A lot of people post their logs on the internet, so that people like me without the necessary software can tie up the flights we saw.

You're surely not the only one! :D
On nice days like these I take my binoculars and take a seat waiting for planes. It's nice to see a 747 cruising at 30.000 feet!

Very interesting. Quite lucky as the Oostend -> Dover route is the busiest flight path in the World, hence being able to spot lot's of the planes/airnlines mentioned above.
