US flights cancelled because of tropical storm Sandy

Post by sn26567 »

Yesterday, coming back from Larnaca at 13:30, I saw many US airliners parked on the apron at Brussels: two United and one Delta. I guessed that they did not fly back to the US because of tropical storm Sandy and I was right. Most flights from Brussels to the US were cancelled yesterday.

Today Tuesday 30 October, all direct flights from Brussels Airport to New York JFK, Newark, Philadelphia and Washington are also cancelled. Flights to Atlanta (Delta) and Chicago (United) will operate normally.

Not sure there are many transatlantic flights arriving at Teterboro...

Brussels Airlines and Delta flights from Brussels to JFK are cancelled tomorrow as well. So is the Jet Airways flight to Newark. No news of American Airlines or United yet.

At LaGuardia airport in New York, Gate C34 is ready to accept boats:

AA is cancelled also but afaik UA is scheduled to fly to EWR, IAD and ORD. I guess IAD and ORD will leave but since EWR is still closed I assume it will be cancelled this night.

Apparently there is quite some extensive damage at JFK, not much specifics about EWR though. All navigational aids are inop at JFK and the word is that repairs will take some time. PANYNJ is working to get JFK open for limited domestic service as early as tomorrow (probably VFR flights only), EWR might open as early as thursday morning according to the latest info.

La Guardia, well as seen on pictures, it's an harbour now, probably the new watertaxi terminal

Delta Air Lines operated the flight to Atlanta right on schedule. And more than that: this afternoon also a second Delta B767 (with winglets) departed to Atlanta.

Brussels Airlines will re-launch its JFK flights tomorrow.

A storm with strong winds is expected over the New York area. Many transatlantic (and other) flights for November 7 and 8 are cancelled again.

All flights out of Brussels to JFK 'SN, DL) and EWR (UA, 9W) have taken off, but SWISS has been more cautious and has cancelled flights LX 14/17/18/19/22/23 today.

Major airlines are scrapping flights in and out of the New York area ahead of the second significant storm in little more than a week.

United, the world's largest airline, is suspending most service here starting at noon Wednesday due to a winter storm forecast for the region. It warns that bad weather will likely cause more delays and cancellations throughout the Northeast.

American Airlines is shutting down in New York at 3 p.m. Wednesday. It's also stopping flights to and from Philadelphia at noon.

Most other airlines, including Delta Air Lines Inc. and JetBlue Airways Corp., are asking passengers to reschedule their Northeast flights for a later date. They're waiving the usual change fees of up to $150.

I was on SN501 today and descent and landing into JFK were very bumpy, lots of turbulence.
On the flipside immigration only took 2 minutes.
BTW - was my first transatlantic with SN and very impressed with the new business class and excellent customer service. I typically fly BA but SN product is much, much better.
