Boeing still plans to make its first B777X delivery in 2020, but it recently pushed back the maiden flight to around February 2019, four months later than initially planned.

Boeing voiced confidence that production rates for its older B777 have stopped falling and signals its faith in rebounding widebody demand. Boeing also just grabbed an order for six B777s, and is confident about filling remaining production slots during the transition to the new B777X.

Etihad is exploring options with Boeing to cancel or defer orders for its 25 B777X (17 B777-9s and eight B777-8s). The carrier may be willing to incur penalties for cancellations rather than be saddled with future recurring losses stemming from overcapacity.

Boeing is looking to make the first test flight of its B777X as soon as late June 2019, slightly later than planned, but still on track for EIS in 2020.

Boeing faces concern over B777X delays from two of its top customers, Emirates and Lufthansa. The UAE-based carrier is drawing up contingency plans in case the June 2020 delivery commitment is missed. Lufthansa may keep some older B747-400s to compensate.

Qatar Airways will be the first airline to receive the B777X, in 2020, as part of the 40 aircraft being delivered to the carrier during the year.

Emirates is in negotiations with Boeing that could substantially defer part of its massive order for 150 B777X jets and perhaps replace some with B787s.

GE Aviation has found unexpected wear in a part for its new engine for the new B777X, forcing a delay of several months while it redesigns and tests the part.

Boeing stated that 777X first flight has been pushed back to "early 2020" due to development issues with GE9X engines.

Entry into service scheduled by Luftansa in December 2020 and Emirates in January 2021.

If the FAA certifies the aircraft in due time...

The above applies to the 777-9X.

Meanwhile, the smaller, longer-range 777-8X has been put on the back burner and will likely slip out past 2022. Boeing confirms it is sliding its 777-8 development programme back following major delays to the 777-9 flight test and certification campaign. The move comes as Boeing continues to funnel engineering resources to tackle the 737 MAX crisis, and could result in first deliveries (if any) of the 777-8 variant slipping into 2023 or beyond.

This reminds me of the A350-800 story!

Another bad news for the 777X. During the final pressurization test on the ground, a door blew off.
