Airbus has resumed work on the modernisation of its A320 Family industrial capabilities in Toulouse, which will replace one of the original Toulouse A320 FALs. It will be installed in the former A380 Lagardere facility and should be operational by end 2022.

Airbus is asking suppliers to get ready for a further 18% increase in A320-family jet output during 2022, on top of existing targets for 2021, as airlines ready for a partial return to normal travel.

Airbus aims to produce a composite wing that could be deployed on an upgraded version of the A320 series — dubbed the A322. The Assembly of the first demonstrator is set to start in the next few weeks and wrapped up in 2023. Modifications of the stretched A321 could also include bigger engines and likely cost in excess of €4 billion.

Airbus sought to dampen speculation about an upgrade to its A321neo single-aisle model, saying “there is no such thing” as a proposal to build what some media have dubbed an A322 with more seats and newer wings.

Airbus says recent large orders (Jet2, Qantas, Air France-KLM, etc.) have strengthened the planemaker’s case for raising production of its A320-family narrowbody jets beyond a firm target of 65 a month.

Qatar Airways versus Airbus: the war reaches new heights. Airbus has cancelled Qatar Airways A321neo order. Not the other way around.

Airbus to increase the A320 Family monthly production rates to 65 aircraft by summer 2023 and 75 in 2025 to meet demand.

On the A321XLR, the company continues to work towards a first flight by the end of 2Q 2022. Initially planned for the end of 2023, the EIS is now expected to take place in early 2024 in order to meet certification requirements. However, Airbus may need to reduce the top range of its coming A321XLR, as EASA seeks to lessen the fire risk from an extra fuel tank in its rear fuselage.

Airbus is adapting the ramp-up trajectory given the current supply chain challenges, and now targets a monthly A320 programme production rate of 65 in early 2024, around six months later than previously planned.

IAG is converting 12 of the A320neo family options announced in August 2013 into firm orders for A320neos and A321neos. The Group is also ordering a further 25 A320neo family aircraft with the option to purchase 50 additional aircraft. The firm aircraft will be delivered between 2025 and 2028 and will be used to replace A320ceo family aircraft.
