If I was to book a flight to America and AA comes out as the best option (time/price/...), then I would book them. I don't think AA is will end it operations before next summer, if current situation worsen they can file for ch 11 (that's almost inevitable now) and still continue ops. And I'd rather see them taken over by another airline (or investors?) than just ending their flight from one day to another.
I don't know if this is an answer to Your question but I have just booked my tickets to the USA with AA for next summer. They are significantly cheaper then all other US carriers ex-Bru (i.e. 700€ instead of +1000€). Ex-AMs and ex-Dus are also more expensive. Flights are loaded with 757 for all legs and already a lot of seats are blocked in the online seat-reservation map. I took the risk!
Whilst there are no guarantees in in this world chapter 11 bankrpuptcy for AA would not necessarily mean the end by any means - I think AA is currently one of the few US majors not to have been through chapter 11 - United, Delta and US Airways have all been throught the process and still flying successfullly[?] to this day.
As other members said above, it should be ok. Even if they are in trouble I don't see them disappear completely...
By the way, we're also looking for some holiday in the US (LAS, LAX or SFO) in july, fares are quite expensive at the moment (+/- 1000€) but since I usually don't travel at that period I don't know what to expect. Any advice about the best period to book ?

1000 Euro is normal to those places in July. I did a quick look for you, cheapest is AMS-SNA (John Wayne, Santa Ana) for 801,- with United. You can try Phoenix as well, for a lower then 1000 euro price.

Thanks a lot for your input, I had PHX as an alternative but didn't even think about "less known" airports like SNA
QF has had a lot of recent Employer/Employee tension. They have also had a lot of safety issues. You could argue the 2 facts are linked (probably not straight forward to prove though).
The relationship b/w AA management and AA staff is not much better (than at QF) and possibly worse. Will AA have any safety issues related to this situation? I have no idea but personally I would avoid them wherever ever possible.
Hmmm... avoiding for safety reasons... ??
Damn I booked them already since this topic started..
but .. can't see a reason why to avoiding them, there wasn't a big impact/case with the chapter 11 for UA,DL,or so... so why now ??
And wasn't QF one of the saftiest in the world,so a bit less safe couldn't hardky have an issue compared with others.. ( besides will the tension for the moment with SN result in a safety issue..guess not )

Yeah well I should clarify I believe that you are more at risk in the taxi on the way to the airport than you will be on an AA or QF flight so I was a bit over the top saying to avoid them for safety reasons.
But I wouldn't be surprised if their number of Maintenance incidents increased a bit, a Guy who has just lost a heap of retirement cash he thought he had coming is not going to be in the best frame of mind. Multiply that by several thousand staff and it has to impact their work performance.
