Boeing is running out of space to stash newly-built B787s, with jetliners seemingly tucked onto every available patch of pavement on airfields near its factories in Washington and South Carolina.

Qantas will next month begin sending most of its B787-9 jets to a storage facility at Victorville. Around 100 aircraft would be stored for up to 12 months, some for longer, and the B787 fleet is part of that.

Boeing will decide as early as September 2020 whether to consolidate its two B787 assembly lines in Washington and South Carolina at a single site. Everett is expected to be the loser.

FAA Statement

The FAA is investigating manufacturing flaws affecting certain Boeing 787 jetliners. The agency continues to engage with Boeing. It is too early to speculate about the nature or extent of any proposed Airworthiness Directives that might arise from the investigation.

One more! This morning, Boeing admits a new manufacturing quality problem!
This time, it's with the assembly of the 787 Dreamliner horizontal tail, work done in Salt Lake City.
Not an immediate safety of flight issue, but the delivery of jets is being delayed for inspections.

Boeing admits a new quality issue on the 787 horizontal tail.
Following an assessment of the manufacturing process, a total of 893 airplanes are believed to be affected.”

That’s the vast majority of the 982 Dreamliners Boeing has delivered! :o

Boeing is nearing a decision to shift more B787 production to South Carolina, a cost-cutting strategy accelerated by the pandemic that would deplete its iconic factory north of Seattle.

Boeing will set plans this week to consolidate B787 assembly in South Carolina, ending production of that jetliner in Washington.

Boeing may lose some tax breaks in Washington State, following the company’s decision to take the B787 to South Carolina.

Boeing has expanded inspections of newly produced B787 after finding a previously disclosed manufacturing defect in sections of the jet where it hadn’t been initially detected.

Air Europa has delayed the delivery of 16 Boeing aircraft – two B787-9s and 14 B737 MAXs – which the carrier was to receive in the coming months. The MAX will now begin delivering from 2022 and the B787s from 2025.

American Airlines haven’t changed the delivery schedule on B787s yet, with 19 deliveries coming in 2021, all fully financed. However, the carrier is talking with its partners on those aircraft. American won’t take any aircraft that don’t have financing going forward.

The FAA plans to perform pre-delivery safety checks on some Boeing 787 Dreamliners, rather than allow Boeing to sign off on new jets, amid tighter regulatory scrutiny.

Boeing is scrutinising the flight-deck windows of some of its B787s as the planemaker expands its search for potential manufacturing flaws that have delayed deliveries of its marquee jetliner.

The FAA will inspect four B787s itself, rather than delegating that work to Boeing, after production issues surfaced in 2020.
