Ryanair does it again
After moving most of its flights from GRO to BCN, with the catastrophic outcome for Gerona we know, Ryanair is opening 35 new routes from VCE, thus probably sending Treviso into oblivion in the near future. TSF brand new airport was completed 3 years ago probably at the request and based on promises by MOL.
Let's just hope they don't do the same with CRL

Re: Ryanair does it again
Hi,
I heard somewhere that the TFS flights are only for a month of 2 cancelled and take to VCE for
works in progress of TFS AIRPORT.
All flights will land at VCE at the same regulations and fares for TFS..
After one month or so FR will return to TFS.. as normal..
Flights of FR aren't bookable from VCE just to TFS.
Don't know if there will be a bus from VCE to TFS BTW.

I heard that Treviso airport will be closed in summer 2011 for upgrade. Probably this is the reason.

Just for clarification: TFS = Tenerife South; TSF = Trevisocathay belgium wrote:TFS AIRPORT

Ok thanks, didn't know about TSF closing. However, there are 7 destinations more from VCE than TSF not bookable yet on either of the cities. Bit strange.

Re: Ryanair does it again
As long as Ryanair respects its obligations, and the contracts it has signed, i don't see how one could blame them. It's business, and Michael O'Leary, like any businessman worth his salt, tries to get the best deals everywhere.azingrew wrote:After moving most of its flights from GRO to BCN, with the catastrophic outcome for Gerona we know, Ryanair is opening 35 new routes from VCE, thus probably sending Treviso into oblivion in the near future. Developing an airport with just Ryanair as user carries a risk, at Charleroi like at Girona or Treviso. Any business with only one customer is at risk.
And Charleroi could just lose traffic to Brussels, just as Girona did with Barcelona. Why not ?
Re: Ryanair does it again
Enrico Marchi, President of Venice Marco Polo airport, confirmed in a recent interview that Treviso airport will be closed next summer, implying this will be for a period of four months. According to Treviso airport, the closure is likely to be for the months of June, July, August and possibly some of September. Airline traffic will be diverted to Venice Marco Polo airport which will have to cope with the additional traffic
The reasons behind the closure are to upgrade the runways and install the necessary equipment to enable flights to land during foggy conditions.

18 ROUTES CUT, 1.7M PAX & OVER 1,000 JOBS LOST AT GIRONA
Ryanair, the world’s favourite airline, today (15th Feb) confirmed the cancelation of its five year extension agreement at Barcelona Girona Airport, which was originally announced in December 2010, as the new Government of Catalonia has refused to honour its agreement with Ryanair. In December 2010 Ryanair and the Government of Catalonia reached agreement on a five year extension of its base operation at Girona Airport under which Ryanair agreed to base 11 aircraft at Girona, operate 64 routes and deliver 4m passengers p.a. which would sustain up to 4,000 jobs in and around Girona Airport. However, the new Government has refused to honour the agreement despite being consulted on it by the outgoing Government.
Ryanair will, from the end of February, reduce its Girona operations by five aircraft, close 18 (of 64) routes and reduce frequencies on 17 other routes, with the loss of over 100 weekly flights, which will see Ryanair’s Girona traffic fall from 4m to 2.3m p.a. with the loss of up to 1,700 local jobs. Ryanair regrets the failure of the new Catalonia Government to honour its five year extension agreement with Spain’s largest airline, at a time when it should be trying to grow jobs and tourism in Catalonia. Ryanair will now switch these five aircraft to lower cost airports elsewhere in Europe.
Charleroi??

Re: Ryanair does it again
I think that the tide is turning with regard to subsidies. Ryanair might have to learn living without local subsidies. The following paragraphs about Germany (and one about France) are other recent examples.
Lufthansa and airberlin have been given the go-ahead to sue Ryanair for getting what they claim are unfair subsidies in Germany.
Germany’s Federal Court of Justice said low fees charged to Ryanair for flying into ‘secondary’ airports Frankfurt-Hahn and Lubeck may breach European Union competition rules.
It says Lufthansa and airberlin can take their case to a civil court, overturning previous court decisions that they could not challenge the charges in a civil case.
In France, the city of Pau also said NO to further subsidies to Ryanair. CityJet has already announced that it would step in!

I wonder if such a ruling in Germany and France would have consequences for...Ostend.

anyone knows which routes out of Girona will be cancelled, and on which routes the frequencies will be reduced?

Re: Ryanair does it again
The magic of words: 4,000 jobs.
The impression is that by the decision of the new city council , Ryanair has to reduce its activity. And thereby something colosal as a entire car factory, steel factory or large coal mine shuts its operation.
But those 4,000 jobs are not Ryanair jobs.
"the loss of up to 1,700 local jobs", again, not Ryanair jobs.
"Up to" means nothing to me. It means a job loss between 0 and 1700 . And far away from 4,000.
As a tax payer in Bruges, I am not happy that my city council directly and indirectly provides subsidies to a company that has been here at Ostend before, left us after we made ourselves utterly ridiculous by changing the airport name to please that company, and leaves me - the tax payer - in the dark what will happen.
It is too easy to blame the politicians ( I guess that the debate is heating up at Girona
).
The people who lured those politicians into the trap are equally responsable.
