Largest jet order in aviation history
IndiGo commits to 180 A320s, largest jet order in aviation history
Becomes a launch customer for the A320neo
India's largest low-cost carrier, IndiGo has signed a Memorandum of Understanding for 180 eco-efficient Airbus A320 aircraft of which 150 will be A320neo’s and 30 will be A320s. It is the largest single firm order number for large jets in commercial aviation history, and also makes IndiGo a launch customer for the A320neo. Engine selection will be announced by the airline at a later date

180 A320neo?
Wow, that's big! It is roughly the equivalent of Lufthansa entire medium-haul fleet (A319-320-321, B737: altogether 175 units according to airfleets.net). According to the same website, IndiGo has currently "only" 34 A320... let's talk about massive expansion plans!

Had a flight with them in November, they are a good low-cost airline. Emergency exit for 5 euros extra!
India's aviation has a bright future!
Air India on the contrary... somebody should just kill that monstrosity.

No, a 150 A320neos and 30 A320s. The airline also has another order of 61 A320s outstanding.SpottairBRU wrote:180 A320neo?![]()

Re: Largest jet order in aviation history
Just noticed I
Anyway, 180 airframes is still a massive order, and I just hope they'll be able to put this MOU into a firm order and be able to get all of them!
Just noticed I wrote too fast yesterday while reading the thread on this subject on airliners.net this morning. Wanted to correct it before anybody noticed it... Simply amazing ...
Re: Largest jet order in aviation history
I thought the largest plane order in history was from American Airlines back in the 1980s when they ordered the MD80 series aircraft from McDonnell Douglas, over 200 airframes

probably they mean the largest jet order in total investment and not in number of aircraft...TexasGuy wrote:I thought the largest plane order in history was from American Airlines back in the 1980s when they ordered the MD80 series aircraft from McDonnell Douglas, over 200 airframes

Re: Largest jet order in aviation history

Re: Largest jet order in aviation history
As far as I've read, this is still an MoU, and not a firm order. Right?
Re: Largest jet order in aviation history
Yes, for IndiGo it is a Memorandum of Understanding, not a firm order.
For Delta, they are looking for a supplier for 200 aircraft: they need to replace a fleet comprising early models of the A320, some MD80s and their fleet of B757-200. No MoU yet, let alone an order.

Hmm.. And what is Boeing rumored to launch? "The new aircraft will replace the 737 and out-of-production 717 and 757..."sn26567 wrote:Yes, for IndiGo it is a Memorandum of Understanding, not a firm order.

Jedi mind trick. These are the airplanes you're looking for.
Re: Largest jet order in aviation history
a 737NEO or new Y1 design comes too late. DL wants its first delivery in 2 to 3 years from now
Re: Largest jet order in aviation history
They are going to order 200 aircraft or more. I wouldn't be suprised if they split up the order. DL has always been a loyal Boeing customer, so it may be that DL orders all Airbus or Bombardier for this 200 aircraft, but that they will order a big amount of the 737 replacement in a later stage to replace aircraft wich currently don't have to be replaced yet. If DL don't order B737 (or it's replacement) for this 200-aircraft order, you can expect them to order the Boeing 737 replacement later.cnc wrote:a 737NEO or new Y1 design comes too late. India's aviation has a bright future, as have faked licensed pilots.
I hope we won't see massive A320NEO crashes in the future

This is what i was thinking as well. Largest number in terms of monetary amount, not in terms of airframes. American Airlines has over 250 MD80s in its fleet, a small number of which inherited from the takeovers of TWA and Reno Air. The vast majority of MD80s resulted from a single stand alone order when the type was first offered
