Looking back at 2010

Post by SpottairBRU »

Dear Luchtzakkers,

2010 is coming to an end, 2011 is close (as we see eg. with the thread on Where will you fly in 2011?)... time is to look back at the past 11,5 months: was it an interesting year for you, aviation-wise? Have you some remorse? Regrets? Did you manage to fulfill your (flight) plans foreseen beginning of the year? What was your best / worst flight of the year? Where they some unexpected events, flights? So, in summary: was 2010 a "grand millésime" for you?

From my side, I can say I cannot complain, even though it was not as great as 2009 (the best year so far).

fulfilled plans: discover at least one:

- new airport: CDG, LIS, PMI, OPO, ZAZ
- new airline: Air France, TAP
- new type: A-380

plans opened and reported to 2011
- a new transcontinental flight (hopefully CDG-JFK or FRA-JFK with the A-380)
- a "props" trip including: Fokker 50, Dash-8, ATR-72, BN-Trislander (should be around Easter)

remorse
- having reported a flight in Ultralight to the next day: weather turned bad during the night

regret
- not having dared to visit the A-380 cockpit on my LHR-CDG flight in July.

unexpected events / flights
- my flights in A-380: saw it totally unexpectedly while looking an info on airfrance.com. Flight was booked ten minutes after.
- two citytrips with FR, on a voluntary basis... people knowing me and my principles had trouble believing me (see also below) I booked with them...
- the visit of LH A-380 in BRU: heard about it 2 hours before its landing, fortunately, I had my camera in the car at the job, for once!
- a flight in DR-400 over the Baie de Somme in November: a surprise from my sisters (at the breakfast: "Fabien, we booked a plane for a sightseeing tour, you come with us, take-off in one hour!").

worst flight of the year
- LIS-BRU on SN's B737-300: OO-LTM. I usually enyoy flying old metal... but I was so much expecting an A319, I was really p***** off when I saw it was not the type expected. I was tired, cramped in seat 4F, and not in a good mood... this plane had at that time all the defaults of the world for me. So, any little quirk was exaggerated in my mind, and I just wanted one thing: be off that plane as soon as possible... add to that a 45 minutes waiting time at the baggage claim (after the long walk under BRU airport) and a piece of luggage damaged (fortunately, my Porto bottles were all intact  )... that was the worst flight I had (even though I know things can be really much worse ;) )

best flight of the year
I was going to say CDG-LHR on AF's A-380... but this one has been put to position number 2 after my last flight which was... ZAZ-CRL with FR! People knowing me thought I was nut when I was telling them that... But it was really the most enjoyable flight I had this year (and in Top-3 of my whole life). Was it due to the Emergency exit seat? The 5 min chat with the very nice F-A, only passenger in the B737 before other passengers came in? The general very good mood amongst the crew and passengers during the whole flight? The captain joking around? The smooth landing? I think that it was everything combined!

So, as I said, 2010 a good year! I hope 2011 will be too :) !

Thanks for the reading... I'd be curious to read your feedback on your 2010!

Well, sorry, no. 2010 was a year without revenue, thus no budget, hence (almost) no flying. Just the bare essentials to keep the license valid. 2011 promises to be better! Several foreign expeditions under consideration: UK, Italy, Balticum... French license, too, with any luck.

Hi,

A wonderful year for me !
Total : 30 flights
New types : C130H , A319 , CRJ900
New airports : GVA,TXl,SXF,DUB,BGY,GRO,SAW,MBA,MRS,STN,BCN
New carriers : EZY/EZS - EI - Belgian Air Component ?
Best: EI BRU-DUB ( extreme smooth flight )
Worst : FR BGY-EIN ( very hard landing by night )
Special : C130 Hercules with BAF and an unexpected extra landing and take-off at Chievres.
Regret : coudn't manage to organise a A380 CDG-LHR flight !!! DAmnnnn

So will see if I can beat 2010 in 2011, seems as now as even good as 2010 with
JFK (finally ) - ORD - BUF and B777-Dash8 ( for almost 3 h ;) ) - CRJ700 - EMB145 in sight but
hard to beat 2010 as my beloved LCC don't organise 2 daily flights to any destination from EIN
anymore ( seems now NO BGY next year  )

Have hard hopes to get on a Catalina - An2 - Ju52 flight next year but will be probably (again) too expensive
but will do our best ..

New types flown 2024 : DO228, A338 , PC6

This was a very good year for me, much better travel-wise than 2009, where I learned never to book Eurostar and instead to stick to flying on holiday!

We used a new airport - Leeds Bradford - which I wasn't impressed with owing to a complete lack of viewing from the departure lounge, but flew on a familiar airline - BMI.

I certainly achieved all my travel plans, which were to have a holiday in Oostende and travel by air. The only downside was the awful Oostende hotel (our usual choice was booked up on the dates we wanted) but hopefully in 2011 we will be back in our favourite again.
Sabena and Sobelair - gone but never forgotten.

classic flights can be OK:

I saw the Ju52 flying around Neuschwanstein, the Walt Disney casttle near the Austrian border. Great.

My 'highlight' this year was BRU-IAD (UA951) in United's new First Class Cabin, brand new seats (boring grey, great space/comfort, nice food).
Worst experience of 2010 was my trip to ACC on AZ (via LOS), big delay, zero communication, very unfriendly crew (had the same crew again 2 days later, still in the same mood) and bad food.

Why I am not surprised about your worst experience?

2010 was a great year for me. The most rewarding flights being the Dubai - Bangkok and Bangkok - Dubai trips on one of EK's A380s just a couple of weeks ago ... Other flights on that trip included AMS-DXB and DXB-AMS on the EK777, a return flight with Bangkok Airways from BKK to Siem Reap in Cambodia, and a return flight BKK-Krabi on Air Asia.

Other flights : a very smooth trip on SN in January to snowy Krakow (and back), an equally smooth flight with Vueling in May from Brussels to Barcelona (and back), and the quite long KL flight from Amsterdam to Lima early June (and back).

The worst trip, however, was Brussels - Catania (via Rome FCO ) on AZ in July. 4 flights, 4 (long) delays, uninterested ans sometimes just plainly rude crew members... No more AZ for me in 2011 (and beyond  ) !

... and mine the visit inside of that LH A380, followed by the inauguration of the 4 new SN African destinations.
