Afriqyiah Airways launches Lyon service

Post by sn26567 »

Afriqiyah Airways yesterday (15JUL10) launched 4 weekly Tripoli – Lyon service with Airbus A319 aircraft. Schedule below:

Code: Select all

8U968 TIP0930 – 1145LYS 319 x257
8U969 LYS1445 – 1700TIP 319 x257
Source: airlineroute.net

By launching more and more European routes and African connecting flights, Afriqiyah seems on the way to become an important player in the Europe to Africa market. AF and SN, take note!

In other African news reported by airlineroute.net, Jet Airways has launched codeshare agreement with Kenya Airways, which Jet’s “9W” code appears on Kenya Airways’ Mumbai – Nairobi route. Codeshare flight numbers below:

Route / 9W Codeshare / KQ Operating

Code: Select all

Mumbai – Nairobi 9W6203 KQ203/205
Nairobi – Mumbai 9W6202 KQ202/204

AF and SN knows that Afriqiyah is becoming an important player. SN said something about Afriqiyah at the inauguration event for their new routes, they talked about unfair competition by airlines like Afriqiyah and Ethiopian.

why unfair competition? i think that european airlines have taken advantage of african markets for decades, and now that those african countries are beginning to launch their own airlines we say unfair competition?

SN calls them aggresive and fighting in an unfair way. Don't know why they say that, but they did. Maybe they call it unfair just because of the aggresive way they are "attacking" the market? AF will think the same, Afriqiyah is attacking AF even more, they are flying A330's to CDG. Compared to just 4 weekly A319/A320 to BRU. Both Ethiopian and Afriqiyah are wholly government owned companies, maybe they help these companies in a way wich SN calls unfair? I don't know...

Let 's see how fast people forget about disasters.
I don't, and decided not to fly Afriqiyah ( to South-Africa ) because they can't properly land on their home base airport.

You can't take British Airways either then because they have difficulties to differenciate grass from paved runway in Heathrow.
I would also not recommend KLM as there pilots have a tendency to take off from taxiways in Amsterdam :-)

Seriously, wait for for the outcome of the crash investigation before blaming a whole airline and consider them as unsafe.

To get back on the topic, how is Afriqyiah doing on their African routes ? Even with low fares and extensive connections, there were only 105 passengers on the A330 JNB-TIP that crashed in TIP. Either the cargo pays a lot better for them than the market rates or they should be bleeding money away.

It's a wholly government owned company (or owned by some kind of organisation under government control), so I wouldn't be suprised if they get serious financial suport from the government (just like most African government owned companies). I don't know if they earn a lot of money with cargo, but I don't think they earn a lot of money on their passengers, but that's just a tought.

This is exactly what Brussels Airlines calls unfair competition!
