Jenever

Anyone else a fan of jenever? We can't get it in Scarborough (surprise surprise, we can't get alot of good things here ) but always get some when we go to Belgium. Which is the best type to get?

I prefer the tastes :
cactus 5* , vanilla , lemon ( Filliers/Smeets/ Welcome in Limbabwe East Province of Belgium )
Since I remember your female,my girlie-friends likes : also vanilla,chocolate,melon
I hate : hazelnut ( tastes likes some medicines from the hospital. )
For the grand-parents : old grain jenever with the deer ! (Hertekamp)
For Dutch minded : BOLS

If you want to taste a lot of them I can recommend U the pub/store VAGANT in old city town of Antwerp!

Where else to go than to Bruges, dear Comet?
We have here a pub specialised in this stuff, it is even named after it: 't Dreupelhuisje.

A lot of guide books to Bruges talk about 't Bruges Beertje, but if you go a few doors on to 't Dreupelhuisje, at number 9 Kemelstraat, you can try a fantastic range of Belgium's other great drink, Jevnever, in warm and friendly surroundings.

Anyway, jenever was always the poor man's liquor. In the old days it was forbidden to be sold in pubs where they only had beer. But there was always a bottle under the counter.
Students like it because of the low price. They drink it in shots together with beer to get drunk faster.

Very popular is the lemon jenever . The brand "Wortegemse" is quite famous. It goes great in coca/pepsi cola.
Jenever is now served at the Christmas Markets all over the country. Just like the German " schnaps".
And another remarkable detail: just last week, the former owner of the distillery "Smeets" got heavely fined because they evaded tax by sending water instead of jenever to Belarus.

I got 2 times extremely drunk by it. After half a bottle, I suddenly lost control, almost passing out. Luckely enough, jenever doesn't give you the same kind of hangover as cheap wine because it contains so little extra chemicals.

Thanks for the replies Normally we have been restricted by what we can buy in the airport duty free, because of the problems with taking liquids on aircraft, so far the only jenever I have tried is Filliers "oude graan jenever" in the brown heavy bottle.

I like the sound of some of the flavoured ones, especially chocolate (I always fancied trying jenever in my hot chocolate at Christmas but couldn't). I am not a big fan of vanilla though.

Our favourite bar in Oostende has a big selection of jenevers, especially flavoured ones. The bar in Brugge sounds good, it's true that guide books about Brugge never mention jenever - thanks for that tip Regi! We had not been in 't Brugs Beertje as much because it was the one all the tourists headed for and used to get crowded so we found another bar which also serves great food.
