Brussels Airport: monthly figures 2009

Post by Atlantis »

JANUARY.

 PAX

In January, Brussels Airport received 1.016.000 pax or a decrease with -15% when we compare this with the same month last year.

 Intra-EU: 631.000 pax: -18,9%
 Extra-EU: 385.000 pax: -7,7%

It was clear that the number of flights within Europe were very low. A lot of carriers used smaller aircraft and a lot of business people are travelling less.

Extra-EU was also lower due to a capacity cut.

 CARGO

In January, Brussels Airport handled 33.100 ton of cargo or a decrease with -50% when we compare this with the same month last year.
We have still to cope that DHL was leaving partly the airport last year, but also the full freighters were doing bad. All operators cancelled more then once their flights. Asia and the Middle-East was doing very bad with low LF.

Within a few days more detailed info per segment.

 MOVEMENTS

In January there were 17.400 flights or movements of the airport or a decrease with -18% when we compare this with the same month last year.

Thanks Atlantis, for confirming what I was afraid for.

Except for freight movements (due to the departure of DHL), Brussels does not seem to do any worse than other European airports.

It's bad luck that we have to add both the departure of DHL and the crisis ...
It's hard to really weight the crisis influence ...
It's bad time for everybody anyway, let's hope it will be over soon ...

Number of passengers at Brussels Airport down by 19% in February

Passengers
In February 2009 Brussels Airport welcomed 1,027,900 passengers, a decrease by 19% compared to February 2008.
However, February 2008 included a leap day – i.e. an extra day of passenger traffic. If we neutralise its effect the decrease in passenger numbers amounts to 15%, in line with that registered in January.

Cargo
February cargo traffic was down 48% on the previous corresponding period. The economic recession continues to weigh heavy on global cargo traffic, especially on the routes to and from Asia.
The recession affects both the full freighter segment (-38%) and the cargo volume carried on board of passenger flights (-44%). A number of airlines compensate the decreased market demand by using smaller passenger aircraft. As a result less cargo space is available on these aircraft.

Aircraft movements
17,151 flights were carried out in February, a decrease of nearly 19% on February 2008.

February 2009 Feb-09 Feb-08 Growth
Passengers (‘000) 1,027.9 1,269.5 -19.0%
Cargo (‘000 ton) 35.9 69.3 -48.2%
Aircraft movements (‘000) 17.2 21.1 -18.7%

January - February 2009 Jan-Feb-09 Jan-Feb-08 Growth
Passengers (‘000) 2,044.3 2,465.2 -17.1%
Cargo (‘000 ton) 69.0 135.9 -49.2%
Aircraft movements (‘000) 34.5 42.3 -18.3%

FEBRUARY.

 PAX

In February, Brussels Airport welcomed 1.028.000 pax or a decrease with -19% when we compare this with the same month last year.

 Intra-EU: 671.000 pax: -20,4%
 Extra-EU: 357.000 pax: -16,3%

Intra: a lot of companies reduced their number of flights to/from Brussels Airport during the winter. Brussels Airlines reduced strongly their flights. Also TCA and Jetairfly flew less.

Extra: Jet Airways and some American carriers used smaller planes.

FEBRUARY

 CARGO

In February, Brussels Airport handled 35.900 ton of cargo or a decrease with -48,2% when we compare this with the same month last year.

 Full freighter: 16.700 ton: -38,2%
 Integrator: 12.600 ton: -58,6%
 Pax flights: 6.600 ton: -44,4%

Brucargo is hit very hard. There were extremely lots of cancellations and a large number of carriers are using smaller planes with less space for cargo.

This on a side note: US Airways is doing very well on the route PHI - BRU. When we only look at the loadfactor then we can say that on most of the days they are flying with a 100% loadfactor. I think that the average loadfactor is 87% - 93%.

How is AA doing at the ORD flight? I guess DL is doing pretty well ATL-BRU since ATL is there power hub, so if AA is doing well on the ORD flight this may be a good trigger for other US companies to rediscover BRU on routes which are not going to 'overcovered' NYC. I always thought BOS and LAX or SFO should sustain a profitable loadfactor to BRU and maybe some smaller airports when connected via each other.

This might be a nice way for SN to reintroduce TATL flights when the economy is bright again. So they can let their partners fly their hubs (CO to EWR and maybe IAH, UA to IAD and LAX or SFO and US to PHL) and SN can pick up routes to BOS, LAX or SFO and the smaller airports when connected which each other and BRU?

In March Brussels Airport handled 1,262,200, passengers, a decrease of 14.7% on the number of passengers registered in the same month in peak year 2008. The decrease in passengers was again most significant on the short-haul intra-EU routes. Cargo was down 47% in March. The economic recession continues to weigh heavy on global cargo traffic. The recession affects both the full freighter segment (-41%) and the cargo volume carried on board of passenger flights (-40%). With a total of 20,142 flights, the number of aircraft movements dropped by 7.6%.

The Dutch travel trade announced a decrease of 21% for holidays-by-plane for the period 01/01/09 till 05/04/09 - compared to the same period last year.

MARCH

 PAX

In March, Brussels Airport received 1.262.000 pax or a decrease with -14,7% when we compare this with the same month last year. Those figures are now approx. the same as in our neighbour airports.

Intra-EU: 822.000 pax: -14,4%
Extra-EU: 440.000 pax: -15,2%

Brussels Airlines is responsible for the deep red figures due to a capacity cut. Other airlines reduced also their traffic to BRU during winter.

When we have a look at the Extra-EU figures then we can see that the Belgian charter companies offered less flights to holiday destinations out of Europe.

F.e. Jetairfly offered 60% less charter flights in Intra and Extra-EU.

MARCH

 CARGO

Brussels Airport, Brucargo, handled in March 39.800 ton cargo or a decrease with -47,2% when we compare this with the same month last year.

 full freighter: 19.600: -40,5%
 integrator: 12.600: -57,9%
 pax: 7.600: -39,2%

Reasons for this is the partly move of DHL to Leipzig, the move of Ethiopian Cargo to Liege and a capacity cut of Cargo B (not foreseen). Other airlines offered less flights or cancelled their flights.
When we have a look on the cargo on pax flights then we can see that Jet Airways used smaller aircraft then a year ago.

 MOVEMENTS

In March there were 20.142 movements on the airport or a decrease with -7,6% when we compare this with the same month of last year.

 MOVEMENTS

Jan - Feb - Mar: 54.646 movements or a decrease with -14,8% when we compare this with the first three months of last year.

LGG had 104.752 tons for the same period. LUX 96.000 for JAN-FEB only.

The situation is different, but I think you will know that.

Brussels airport lost partly DHL in april last year. I thought that ET moved to LGG in May or June last year.
Brussels airport is focused on the Asia, Middle East, USa market. Those are hit very hard and that's why the figures are so bad. The only airline with "good" loads is Saudi Arabian and Cargo B.

The figures will be different within a month. The decrease in the integrator figures will be less worse. DHL can show then figures between now and when they moved away from Brussels Airport.
