freight effected by MK airlines is a reasonable excuse for a small decrease but not for -30% and more!

Great ! It remains to be seen whether they will be able to keep their schedule of 3-4 flights a week, but in any case it seems to be good news for OST and is likely to help in countering the downward cargo trend of the last year at the airport...World Airways signed a two-year contract with Allied Air to start up cargo flights between Belgium and Nigeria.

The fact that WOA is operating from Ostend now won't change a thing to the bad cargo figures. WOA is just flying the legs that were flown by Gemini Air Cargo before it went bankrupt. In Ostend they even consider themselves lucky that ANA Aviation Services, which is the sales agent for Allied Air, still wants to operate from the airport, as there were several attempts from cargo operators to truck the freight to other airports (like Atlas Air did just shortly after Gemini's demise, by trucking it to AMS).
Nevertheless, this year will be a very bad one cargowise. Of course there was the fact that MK stopped flying for several weeks, but the airport has also been closed for large cargo operators for a couple of weeks due to works on the runway and Gemini's demise has caused quite some interruptions in the scheduled services of ANA. Egyptair's operations have been downsized since it's moved its cargo hub from Ostend to Hahn. A lot of MK freight formerly handled in Ostend is now flown directly to Manston on request of a client. Another client of MK went to Amsterdam with its weekly service. And so on...
But the real worry is the fact that despite those alarming figures (one should know that this trend is now already ongoing for almost a year) nobody seems to do something about it. Management nor politicians are reacting. When you see that other airports in the neighbourhood are attracting new cargo operations despite the economic crisis we're in, they should at least start to ask questions.
Luckily for Ostend passenger figures are rising, just by using bigger airplanes, because no new lines have been started up this year. And the movements are also improving due to a higher activity of the pilot schools located at the airport. But it's a cold comfort for an airport which is claiming to be THE cargo airport of Flanders.
