Fasten seatbelts during flight

Post by vladislav »

Few weeks ago I flew with SN Brussels from BMA to BRU. During the flight cabin crew (including the captain) repeated several times to keep our seatbelts fastened during whole the flight. I never remarked this procedure before, but since it was a long time (2 years) i've been flying with SN Brussels I supposed safety procedures might have been changed.

However, last week I did the traject BRU-THF/THF-BRU and crew nor safety instructions told anything about keeping our seatbelts closed during the flight. In fact, after 10 minutes the "fasten seatbelts" sign went out and moving arround the plane was possible.

How can this be possible?

And just to be complete: weather conditions looked even better on the BMA flight (almost no turbulence) then on the THF flight (turbulence).

What I often notice, not with SN I might add, is that many airlines advice the use of the seat-belt throughout the flight while seated, even when the seat-belt sign is off.

My usual practice is to loosen a bit the belt during cruise which does it as far as comfort is concerned.

I can only remember hearing of those tragic accidents over the Pacific where sudden heavy turbulence caught passengers in their sleep and/or without a seat-belt fastened, and sent them crushing their skulls on the overhead bins, resulting in loss of lives. I've experienced rather heavy turbulence somewhere between HKG and LHR about 10 years ago and I'm still weary of it.

My advise: buckle up!
