Boeing hits back in secret?

Post by A318 »

Boeing is veryyyy busy with some new ideas and ready to hit back in the future:

Boeing BWB
First flight: 2010
Wingspan: 289 ft. 0 in. / 88.1 m
Length: 160 ft. 10 in. / 49.0 m
Height: 40 ft. 11 in. / 12.5 m
Ceiling: 41,000 ft.
Range: 8,000 nm / 14,816 km
Weight: 823,000 lbs / 373,307 kg (MTOW)
Power plant: ???
Speed: 562 knots / 1,041 km/h / 0.85 mach
Crew: 2
Accommodation: 800 in three class configuration

Image

The BWB concept houses a wide double-deck passenger compartment that actually blends into the wing. Adjacent to the passenger section is ample room for baggage and cargo.
Preliminary analyses indicate that the BWB would outperform all conventional aircraft. It is conceived to carry 800 passengers 8,000 nautical miles at a cruise speed of approximately 560 knots. This is almost twice the passenger capacity of the Boeing 747-400 and 69% larger than the new Airbus A380! This design would reduce fuel burn and harmful emissions per passenger mile by almost a third in comparison to today's aircraft. Other potential benefits of the BWB include increased aerodynamic performance, lower operating cost and reduced community noise levels.

More as enough passengers seats:

First windtunnel tests already performed:

Allright luchtzak friends, now we have something to talk about ;)

Are you sure about all the figures :?:

An a/c with double the capaicity of a 747 with almost the same range at a lower MTOW ( MTOW 747-400 396000kg).

The Blended-Wing-Body project was closed about at the end of 2002, maybe they re-opened it ...

If you look at the following link, that the project was initially started by McDonnel Douglas. When Boeing took over McDD, they went on with the project, but closed it after some while because they thought it had no future ...

Okay pictures problem is fixed, but now what is going on?
Is this ineed ended in 2002 as canonfreak is telling us or did they keep on working on this project in secret?
Anybody has this information?
Now I want to know it also!

Great post. :D

However this is what the President of Boeing said about the concept.

Mulally said Boeing's assessment of the market has back-burnered the Blended Wing Body concept, at least for now, since the BWB "only makes sense in an aircraft larger than the 747, and we see the most growth in the 757-767 size range."

Seems logical to me but what I found curious was the the information that it would start flying in 2010, this should be 2 years after the introduction of the7E7, couldn't it be that they will anounce a whole new aircraft line by that time with the 7E7 in place of the 757/767 and the BWB in place of the 747-400??? I don't know but I have laways something like where is smoke, is fire :)

This things looks great!, however my favourite boeing remains the 727. Only it has't that many windowseats and 800 people is quite a load, even for Qantas or BA... oh and How does this thing connect to an airport terminal?

You can find these Wings in every book about the future(even the old ones) so it's not a new concept...

the only problem is they have to build whole new airports for it, because it is much wider than a 747...

I wouldn't count on it the first 30 years...

I would not like to be a passenger in the middle seat of the middle row of the center section

2010?
ample room for baggage and cargo and no window seats?
As I see it, the windows are in de front of the passengers?
Is there already a product, transparent and strong enough to resist pressurisation and BIRDSTRIKE?
Birdstrike usually never happens laterally... Or the window would not be wider then the ones in cockpits? Not much for 800 passengers: its already forbidden to queue at the lavatories, will that apply to the windows?
Are you sure this secret is kept from the aviatian or the SF- movie business? This looks more like a mock up for a movie then a realistic commercial transport vehicle.

hihi and what happens with the row numbers... usually they start on the left hand side with A and finish on a 737 with F, a 767 with G and a 747/777 with K but as I can count we would have more than 26 pax abreast.... let's use the chinese or japanese signs instead :)

Not bad your Q, OCR_ole_ole!
But the solution is simple: just inverse iso seat 1a or 26K, you can have A1 or K26, and that looks simple too for the boarding procedure with this futuristic vessel: you will board via gate A, reaching your section A, where you seat A1 is the first one at your left.... Of course we will start boarding with rows 28 per section.
Needless to explain the procedure for seat 26K, notice this is on the upperdeck. Oh boy....

To be honest...I don't like how it looks
I like airplanes, not "flying fishes".
The concept maybe great but the esthetics...yuck

It has to be an airplane, this is more a Star-Trek thing!

Well, very impressive and futuristic indeed.

But, this massive plane will probably need many alterations to be done at airports around the World. (gates at terminals, runway length, bays, new extra large maintenace hangars, etc...)

Airbus once thought of similar plans but concluded that airports would have to be radically changed to accomodate such planes.

The advantage with the A380 is that it will not require that much changes to airports.

Nice idea, but you have to look at the practical side of things.
