VLM to add Fokker 70

Post by liebensd »

I found this on the net:
VLM Airlines (VG/Antwerpen) plant Berichten zufolge die drei Fokker 70 von Air Littoral (FU/Montpellier) zu übernehmen.
VLM Airlines will take 3 Fokker 70's of Air Litoral

and
Airlinerworld May 2003

A month ago there was an article on Luchtzak that VLM would not update their fleet.
Wednesday 12 March

Can somebody tell me more about this, or what is true?

Or is there an connection between a chairholder of VLM who wants to invest in Rekkof (Fokker from right to left). Rekkof is a company that want to restart building the Fokker 70.

That would be great news if VLM finally entered the jet era.

This would be quite good for VLM. Ik know lots of people who dislike the Fokker 50. On the other hand, I have my doubts that VLM would change it's fleet in the current economic environment.

Sorry to be so long in adding my reply!

VLM has to consider aircraft which are capable of flying into LCY (London City) as many of their flights use this airport. Not sure if the Fokker 70 fits that bill, but perhaps they have plans to move into other markets which do not include London?

Having spoken to a commercial person from VLM early in April it would appear that 2003 will be a year of consolidation rather than expansion, but plans do not always get fed to the troops!

The Fokker 70 (an even the Fokker 100) are capable of operating into London City.

Fokker did the necessary testflights and validating ...

Anyway ... the Fokker 70 would be a little bit sexier than the Fokker 50 isn't it?

Note that, before a F70 can fly into LCY, it needs serious modifications.

Only a very few F70's flying around have those modifications.

This is a log from LCY today (taken from civil spotters Yahoo list - Thanks Dave)

As you can see there are 6 VLM F.50's and not too many jets.

There are proposals to lengthen the runway but the approach will still be steeper than at regular airports (5 or 6 degrees as opposed to normal 3 degrees) so aircraft must be capable of this. I know the CRJ doesn't meet current requirements.

If VLM will be the only ones to operate the F.70 there may be too much cost in getting the a/c modified and certified.
