New Delft material concept for aircraft wings could save bil

Post by A350XWB »

Building aircraft wings with a special aluminium fibre combination makes them nearly immune to metal fatigue. The application of this technology, partly developed at Delft University of Technology, will lead to substantial savings. The unusual qualities of this special material (called CentrAl, an abbreviation of Central Reinforced Aluminium) can make a significant contribution to the development of truly energy-efficient, ‘green’ aircraft. Lower fuel consumption and reduction of maintenance costs could lead to worldwide savings as high as $100 billion.

GLARE already has CTE problem, this material (same developers) is no different and why no GLARE on A-350 ever??

I suppose GLARE is heavier? Wasn't it the same weight as standard aluminum or so? Perhaps that's why it's not used on the A350.

This material is supposedly 20% lighter than carbon fibre composite for the same strength.

No, GLARE is lighter than aluminum and that it is was used on A380 and I take 20% lighter than CFRP with several large grains of salt and still has same CTE problems as GLARE.
