The Antonov aircraft belonging to Congolese airline Africa 1 came down on several shacks in the Kingasani neighbourhood near Ndjili international airport, the sources said.

"There were 17 people on board," said airport protocol official Jean-Claude Bakongo. A major explosion followed the crash, he said. "I saw it fall in the Kingasani neighbourhood."

Another airport security official who went to the crash site told Reuters fire fighters had struggled to reach the wreckage in the shanty town.

"There are at least four houses burning, the airplane is burning ... There's a lot of smoke and flames, everybody in the houses must be dead," he said.

KINSHASA, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Congolese President Joseph Kabila sacked his transport minister on Friday as the death toll from the latest air accident in the central African country rose to more than 50.

But authorities announced that a Congolese mechanic aboard the Russian-made cargo plane that came down in Kinshasa had survived the accident.

I think Kabila did the right thing, people should know that he wants the country to go forward...

Kabila should at least have waited till some more details abouit this crash were known. Was the plane overloaded? Failure during maintenance? Was there a runway obstruction? Engine failure during take off? We don't know yet, and I don't think that the DRC-government knows it yet.

Also, blaming one minister for the total state of illness of his country isn't proof of great leadership.

9Q-COS AN-26
Belongs to El Sam Airlift (owner is the brother of the owner of Africa One)
Flight Kin-Tshikapa operated for Malila

Said to have lost the left propeller seconds after T/O
Banked left dumping fuel, remained at tree height until it crashed on "houses"

After the flight ban on all Antonovs (17-9), status of each a/c was reviewed case by case. 9Q-COS was cleared only days before it crashed.

Minister of Transport (Gatanga) was sacked by Presidential decree less than an hour before he had to appear in Parliament for a hearing.

Banning AN to fly means simply isolating dozens of cities and thousands of villages as air links are the only means of communication.
26 crashes in DRC so far this year and it is not over.
