Re: Airbus cabins 'too quiet'?
If you put a couple of hundred people in a tube seal it and make it quiet what do you hear? Looks of human generated noise all the way from passing wind, burping etc, to loud know it alls talking, the noise of people just shuffling their feet and belongings, noisey carts, the toilet, and heaven forbid, perhaps, one day, mobile phones!CX wrote:Just saw this article.. before i start laughing, is there actually anything bad about being quiet?

I think it is essential to have the ambient noise of engines and wind. I find it quite pleasant actually.
As for the 380, we will just have to wait and see the level of it's quietness, and whether this is a problem.

Some planes will be equipped with USB ports, Internet....I wonder about Skype more than mobile phones !Ruscoe wrote:If you put a couple of hundred people in a tube seal it and make it quiet what do you hear? Although it's a lame argument, there's some thruth in it.
I have noise cancelling earphones and when I use them in the plane, the engine and wind noise are drastically reduced. But then you hear people talking and walking around (Try Hainan between Brussels and Beijing or should I say the Beijing silk market in the sky). I ended up switching to my ear plugs (great invention!)
Cheers,

My goodness please... if this is all Boeing can come up with....
Pretty desperate.
Giving thought they still have secured more orders this year than Airbus and having given Airbus a big blow in the A300-767 A310-757 replacement segment with its 787, this is a very very dumb statement to make...
It is true that no engine noise will give you more chance to hear conversations on board, willing or not. But please... it's even explained as if passangers will "suffer" from anything, as if having a quit cabin will cause some medical problems...
One would start thinking that they are getting very desperate about the 748I program and therefore criticizing the A380...
They are not even in very direct competition as they are still oriented at two different segments and only touch each other in the low end of the A380 and high end of the 748I...
This quit cabin argument definitely won't help to convince people that the A380 isn't the right plane for them...
Let's go back to Carvelle times... even after a short domestical flight in France, you came out almost deaf...so noisy on board...

I cannot imagine an aircraft will have quietness levels that is absolute silence that will cause others to hear your conversation, this is in a world of its own, i can't believe it. According to this theory, anywhere public you should always generate noise loud enough that even when you speak normally, the guy behind can't hear you..
Yes, i don't really mind if an aircraft I'm in is noisy because it is what I have expected already, quietness is certainly better..
And, isn't 'quietness' a selling point of their own 787? I would love to see whether Boeing markets their 748I having 'pleasant engine noise for speech privacy' or something, and by the way, don't all planes have inbuilt speakers that works like noise cancelling earphones?

CX... I just love your sentence regarding how Boeing will sell its 748I stating that it will have a nice engine sound in the cabin
As you said, indeed, they use noice cancelling in all cabins by emitting sounds that have the exact opposite shape than the engine noise.
A positive and a negative wave of the same intensity but opposite, cancel each other...

This is just funny and pretty ridiculous, but not surprising in the ongoing Airbus v Boeing war. I think Leahy should just concentrate on doing his job and not care about whether a person will be able to hear the conversation of another person inside the A380. As far as I'm concern, noise levels should be the least thing to talk about when it comes to the A380.
As I said before, John Leahy seems to be the only person at Airbus that knows what he is doing. The past 15 months have been tough on Airbus, yet on the sales department, they have done pretty well and that is to the credit of Mr. Leahy.bits44 wrote:Wait a minute! you mean John Leahy still works for Airbus!
I thought they put him out to pasture?
I guess Airbus hasn't had anything controversial to have John jump in on.
