Fly on a big aircraft on a very short route?

Post by nic_biso »

Does anyone know how you can fly onboard a big aircraft, like A310, A330, A340 or B767, B777, B747, on a very short route, under 2-3000 km?!

I know that Aer Lingus uses A330 for a very short hop SNN-DUB or DUB-SNN, before continuing its flight to the US destination airport. The flight takes about 40 min. and it costs, if you book early, about 60 euros. Great price!
So, are there any more flights like this one?

P.S.: I heard some rumors... With the fog in Western Europe, BA was considering of flying the passengers on B747 to its European destinations. Imagine flying onboard B747 from LHR to FRA or VIE!

If you are a European, or if you want to fly with a heavy in Europe, you can find some information in this topic.

I dunno for Europe, where it would be exceptional; however, in Asia, it is so normal, that seeing a narrow body at some airport is an event.
Hong-Kong - Taipei is the busiest route in the world using wide bodies, of which the A330 is the smallest one. Kaoshiung - Hong Kong is shorter but not so busy in Wide Bodies. JAL has specially custom made 744s for their domestic routes.
The shortest one I ever flew there was on an MD11, between Hsin-Shu and Taipei CKS: Had to leave the gear down and LOWER the flaps after take off.
Happy New year.

My favorite:
Iberia MAD-TFN and MAD-LPA
Most of the time you have the choice between A340-300 and A340-600. It used to be 747-300 and -400 but unfortunately they got rit of their jumbo's.

cheers!

I flew from Cebu to Manila on a PAL Boeing 747. I counted 15 people in economy... The plane was registered N753PR.

This flight is "famous". In 1994, on Philippine Airlines Flight 434, a small bomb detonated under a seat, killing one of the 287 passengers onboard. The terrorist was no-other than Ramzi Yousef (aka Armaldo Forlani), a master Al-Qaeda bomber.
The flight is operated on B747, Manila-Cebu-Tokyo NRT.

The late lamented VARIG used to use dc10/md11/747 on the rio -sao paolo legs of their intercontinental flights and passengers could sometimes find their short shuttles of 45 minutes or so on one of them...my first experience of first class came on that little route when it was open seating one night.

I flew a Gulf Air A340-300 on Dec 14 last year between Muscat and Bahrain ... and even that plane seemed too small as they gave me an upgrade to business class :) The plane went on to FRA, but I had to get out in Bahrain to catch the A330 to CDG...

Yes one of the early morning flights KLM from AMS to LHR is on a A332.

I think the shortest UK widebaody route is LGW to Cardiff..a 763 of Zoom en route for Canada but I doubt you could buy a ticket for the domestic leg..but you never know.

BA used to regualrly run 767s to Frankfurt Paris Rome and Milan but I think they have gone now. Also have taken LH A300 for Dusseldorf and Frankfurt.

These days you need to go to the eastern med to be sure of a BA widebody..the shortest 777 service being I think that to Tel Aviv.

There is a BA 767 running to Barcelona for the Grand Prix weekend in early May...and I will be on it!

I live close to the Heathrow flight path and from my kitchen window see LH A300s still and occasioanlly Aer Lingus A330 [presumably from Dublin].

Until recently you could take Varig MD 11 to Copenhagen and in the further distant past Swissair MD11s as well used to fly in and United [or was it AA] 767s used to go across the channel to either BRU or AMS.

Funny. Amadeus shows AZ7055 in Code Share but ... it leaves BRU 10 minutes earlier and with 733 !
Same on return, Amadeus SN3176 FCO 1025 with AR1. FlySN site gives 1110 and equipmentt is 333 !
Go figure. :?

I did a flight Dammam to Bahrain once on KLM a few years ago. They have changed the routing now to Doha - which is still short. The full routing was AMS - DMM - BAH and it was a Boeing 767. I remember it taking off from Dammam, following the causeway straight to BAH and landing - 20 mins maybe?

Emirates and the other gulf carriers frequently use wide bodies on short hops of an hour or so.

Chunk..I presume you changed in AMS and din't take the 767 as a through service from ABZ with jsut a stop in AMS?

Your post reminds me that British Airways fly Abu Dhabi to Muscat on a 777, a journey time of just one hour.
