Short-haul routes with heavies in Europe

Post by golf1411 »

In previous posts I mentioned the LAN A340-300 flying the Frankfurt-Madrid route.
We have the LH A300 on domestic routes and the KLM A330 flying to Heathrow.
Can you think of other short-haul routes with heavies in Europe?

on some routes BA uses a B767 (LHR - ATH), OA uses it's A300's and A340's on flights to LHR and CDG (and occasionally other destinations), EI flies DUB-SNN on the A330 and of course Iberia flies the A340 to Tenerife from Madrid.

Turkish Airlines flies to many European destinations with their Airbus A330-200 fleet (f.e. IST-DUS).

I've heard that LH sometimes uses the A340-600 on the FRANKFURT-MUNICH route. Can somebody confirm this?
I know that IBERIA sometimes uses the A346 from Madrid to Tenerife Nord.

BA often uses a B767 to NCE, used to have a 767 to BRU too and I think still uses a 767 to FRA as well as other high capacity short haul European routes.

And we use the A300 on Bru-Cgn and even daily Bgy-Mxp.
This is cargo but short flights with heavy aircraft :)

Also AF flies 744 on their domestic Orly-Ajaccio.
Those a/c used to be the same as those flying to the French Carribean, so high density versions. Now they are replacing their 744 fleet to the 'DOM/TOM' by 777, I don't know what will happen for the some ORY-AJA operated on 744...

Scheduled heavies on short haul?

Post by SN30952 »

I remember Sabena flying 747 to PMI, AGP...
Specialised in scheduled heavies on short haul are the Japanese cies.
TG scheduled 777s CNX<>BKK.
But in Europe I do not find scheduled heavies on short haul.

I remember being on a BA 767 to Paris once and a British Airtours Tristar to Malaga as well but this was quite a while ago.

Other than that I vaguely remember flying DXB to MAN on an SQ 747 - maybe about 1988? It stopped in Frankfurt or something on the way - does that count?!!!

Air Namibia operated Frankfurt-London quite a while before continuing to Windhuk. Flight was operated by B747.

Ghana Airways operated an Accra-Hamburg-Düsseldorf-Accra flight until 2004 with DC-10's. Hamburg-Düsseldorf is a German domestic leg on the route.

Ethiopian Airlines is currently flying a B763 between Paris CDG and BRU.

Regards, Robin Bamps.

PS: Sometimes there is pax also on the AMS-BRU leg by Martinair (B763).

Last sunday I saw an IB A346 taking off from LPA (Las Palmas, Gran Canaria), no doubt it was going to peninsular Spain as well. And we were stuck in a HV 73H for 4+ hours to AMS! :-(

I must say though, IB doesn't ever seem to wash their planes. Either that, or the washing is being done by the same crews that 'wash' the toilets at Spanish airports.

I read in Airlinerworld that Finnair is using its first A340-311 (OH-LQA) on domestic flights, I thought it was only for 30 flights, to train the long-haul crew.

Kind of off-topic (as it is not in Europe), but perhaps it is worth mentioning here that Iran Air flight 655, the one shot down over the gulf by the USS Vincennes in 1988, was an Airbus A300 which was supposed to do a 28-minute flight across the gulf.
