How does the amount of kerosine gets determined?

Post by Twiedakker »

Hi,I was wondering how it is determined with how much kerosine a plane is allowed te get in the air. I read they don't "fill em up" but put enough in for the flight + a safety margin of extra kerosine. Is that correct?Does it differ from plane to plane and why?How is it calculated?
Thx,grtz,Twiedakker.

I'm not sure but I thought that they calculate how much they need for the flight, a 45 minute safety and some extra to get to the second-option airport.
But I am not sure if this is correct. :?

There's definitely a safety, and other than that it's rather complex..the pilots calculate it and have to count in lots of stuff.. :(
Won't be too easy to figure it out..

Here is the answer.
The item is "Fuel calculation".

Simply said:
You will need on a one-leg trip:
Taxi fue x2
Trip fuel x1
Diversion / safety fuel

a/c load and runway length also seem to play a role in the calculation. Last year when returning from JKH via MJT we had to make a fuel-stop in VIE. Before take-off at MJT the captain told us that we were not allowed to fly direct to BRU because of heavy a/c load and the limited runway length so the load seemed to be compensated with taking less fuel resulting in the fuel-stop.

Min fuel required :

taxi / APU fuel +
trip fuel +
contigency fuel (usually 5% of trip fuel) +
alternate fuel +
final reserve (jet = 30 mins holding fuel at 1500' above aerodrome level // turboprop = idem but 45 mins)
