First passenger flight in 11 years leaves Somalia

Post by ElcoB »

A conventional passenger plane flew in and out of Mogadishu's recently re-opened international airport for the first time in 11 years on Sunday in a sign of stability Islamists have brought to the capital.

"From now on, our airplanes will fly and land into Mogadishu's international airport," Jabril Hussein, an administration officer of local Jubba Airways.
This was a newsflash, 30 july, from Reuters today.
Anybody knows what plane Jubba Airways is using for this flights?

Hello ELcoB,

Jubba Airways is in fact an airline based in Somalia. The airline was founded by Calgary(!) entrepreneurs and service began in May 1998. Jubba Airways largely fills the niche left by the demise of state-owned Somali Airways. Nowadays, Jubba Airways predominantly serves Southern Somalia. Flights to the UAE and flights for Hajj pilgrims are important routes for the carrier. Destinations include Bossaso, Djbouti, Dubai, Hargeysa, Jeddah, Mogadishu, and Sharjah. Although the airline used Ilyushin Il-18Ds in the past, more "modern" Boeing 737-200s have joined the fleet to serve all of the airline's destinations. Pictures of the relatively new varrier can be found on: http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.s ... entry=true.

Hoping that this can be useful,
Christophe B.
