Will Boston be the first SN operated US flight ?
Hey all,
Rumours are telling that Boston will be the first of three destinations that SN will fly in the US.
They are currently in talks with boeing to find 6 767-300ER for the price of 4 A330.
Somebody with more info?

6 767? Together with the 3 A330s or to replace them? Seems like a nice long-haul fleet though.

What are the other 2 US-destinations... and when will they start to serve these cities. I heared about this rumour already for almost a year now. Who knows for how many years to come, it will still be just a rumour....flyexel wrote:Boston will be the first of three destinations that SN will fly in the US.
The 767's become less competitive in terms of comfort and economy.
I see the need for SN to grow on long-haul flights on own metal - but 767 are not the best metal around .I could understand 777 or 330's .
BRU to JFK and BOS would easily fill a 777 each day ,provided they expand somewhat their feeder-network.

it would be nice!!
This will be a great step forward for SN
Hope the rumours come true, and maybe we can expect more wide-bodies for SN.
I personally think 2 new B777-200 and the 3 A333 will be an verry good fleet. with the b777 they can bring more capacity to the populairest african destinations + flights to the US.

Don't go off-topic, we were talking about the 767's, NOT 777'sbrieky wrote:it would be nice!!

Well if SNBA is looking for airplanes, there are some available around here...
One Varig MD11 (broken) in Brasilia
Three B767 from Transbrasil in Brasilia (stuck there for the last 5 years)
One Varig MD11 in Sao Paulo
One A300 from Vasp also in Sao Paulo, (stuck there for the last 5 years)
and there should be some big planes available also in Rio de Janeiro from Varig.
u see...

One of the last Brazilian birds that was taken over by a Belgian company didn't seem to be a good buy. FYI: it was re-registrated to OO-TUC...Telspace wrote:Well if SNBA is looking for airplanes, there are some available around here...

Before starting rumours like having B777 or MD11 etc, etc we know that they having talks with Airbus and Boeing to add two or three long hauls to double that fleet.
I expect in September or October that they will announce what plans they have. What kind of destinations they want to fly to in the USA and what kind of airplanes they want to use for.
I can't understand why they have to refurbish the three current A330's and spending millions of euro's and then replace them with old B763 with higher maintenance costs, less capacity and learn your pilots to fly with Boeing's. Don't forget that most of the Africa flights are overbooked. I know one example with 80 overbookings for one flight. You can't do that with B763.
Also an issue, BIAC wants a strong home player. They don't one to have it when you are going to reduce capacity. Transporting 300.000 pax, SNBA, in May is not that much, so they have to grow in numbers of long haul and aircrafts.

I tought they where just adding 767s, not using them to replace A333s. If they really needed 767s to replace A333s, then I would certainly reccomend the 764. But I think route to America are a good idea. SN has a high rating with the passengers. Everyone is complaining about the US carriers. So why no adding 763 or new 764 to perform those opperations?I can't understand why they have to refurbish the three current A330's and spending millions of euro's and then replace them with old B763 with higher maintenance costs, less capacity and learn your pilots to fly with Boeing's. But I have my doubts about the whole story tough. I remember them saying that the fleet will remain the same untill 2010. And that is after the merger, too.

One of my beefs with the US cariers is that they use the 767! Unless you get an exit seat it is not my favourite aircraft by any stretch. Yes, even the 764 of Continental, who as I keep saying are quite possibly the most over-rated carrier I have ever been on. I mean my expectations on AA and NWA were low anyway so the average fligths i had with them seemed quite good.
I remember going from LGW - Newark - Minneapolis return in '92 (b747, b727) on the previous incarnation of Continental and the service was way better than now. Maybe thats why the went bankrupt!
If I was SN I would try and get more 330's. Get some 200's for the Atlantic routes and keep the bigger ones solely for Africa. When i was in Luanda last month I spoke to an American chap who came down on SN - said it was the best flight he had in years. Then again he is United Platinum so I guess the benchmark ain't great!
