My opinion about using a cellphone in an airplane.. I'm totally against it !!
Can you imagine a longhaul flight where every 10 minutes a mobile goes off or passengers start shouting on the phone while you are sleeping? Arrgh.. can't even imagine....
For me, being on the plane is a relaxation time in which I don't want to be disturbed by the noises of ringing phones !
Your opinions about this?

I personally am of the view point that cell phones should not be allowed whilst the flight is in motion.
Contrary to what i believe, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines are going to allow passengers use of cell phones from the end of 2006. They are working of the technology with a service provider and an avionics company.

Aum Sweet Aum.
I would think that the technology that will be used to connect to your service provider will determine usage.
You will be paying a roaming charge for service, if they use VOIP to connect to a service then you will be paying for airtime, satellite access fee's and more. it will certainly be a completely different service and fee structure than you would use on Terra firma.
most cell sites have a very limited range, and little or no vertical alignment of their antennas, so don't expect very good service.
It will NOT be cheap.

No, definitely no. It is bad enough being on a train for an hour hearing stupid bimbos yelling "hi I'm on the train" into their silly mobiles without being on a plane for a few hours and hearing nothing but stupid bimbos and pompous businessmen conducting their business in full hearing of a captive audience.
And don't the ringtones p*ss you off

rofl, that's exactly what I mean ! For these reasons there should remain a ban on the use of mobile phones in an airplane... just like in movie theatres where you are enjoying a good movie when all the sudden a phone rings and some selfish guy/girl even answers the call.. or wait.... they first take the cellphone, let it ring for about 10sec while they are stearing at the display thinking 'hmmm.. who is this?...do i know this number?' For godsake shut down the d*mn phone !!!
Just my 2 cents..
This is a social and not a technological problem. I'm afraid we will have to learn to live with it. I believe it was Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, who remarked how the telephone changed, and in fact diluted, social customs, complaining how nobody would ever ring your doorbell around dinner time, but people would call on the phone around the same time without thinking twice.
OMG I just had a mental image of a Transavia flight with on board cell phone service. *shudder* Most Transavia passengers are exactly the type who would actually call eachother on their cell phones from across the same plane!

it is certainly a social problem.. just like people getting out of their seat during taxi after touch down and not being corrected by the crew! [that happened to me on a Swiss flight -hail to Swiss Quality ahem...- from ZRH to Moscow (DOM) --> which also included a dog in cabin !!
:dammit:
On transcontinental flights of 5+ hrs or so, where lots of people would like to take a nap airlines should just enforce (yes enforce) the quietness asked by many pax.
just like i am not going to interrupt my neighboors more than once to go to the loo when i sit next to the window, it is social conduct to not interrupt other pax with "so called important work"... if people cannot handle a long flight without their cell, they did something wrong in their "time management". and otherwise they should just use their CC in the satellite phone already on board.

Yes, the crew should be armed with electric cattle prods to keep passengers in their seats at all times, I agree wholeheartedly!
But seriously, with the increasing multifunctionality of phones, as well as the increasing amount of other devices using radio for communication, it is inevitable that it will be allowed to use these devices on board during flight, even if not for making calls.
In the past, demolition crews used electric wiring to set off explosive charges to bring down buildings. But nowadays, they use special quick-burning fuses, because the ever-present cell phones can easily set off charges with electric fuses.
