Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport

Post by hakan »

It looks like Istanbul's second Airport-Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International (SAW) is fast becoming a Low Cost Airport. After Germanwings, Condor, Corendon, Air Arabia, Easy Jet (as well Pegasus Airlines and THY for domestic flights) Italian LCC Myair has announced that they will be flying to SAW twice a week from Milan Orio Al Serio (BGY). Myair will fly every Monday and Friday to SAW and add Wednesday flights in September.
To promote this flights, Myair is offering 10 seats on each flight at rate of 0.01 Euro until 25.May.
So my friends If you plan to visit Istanbul please visit www.myair.com quickly.

Cheers. :D 8)

Let's add HapagFly (from November 2006) to the list of LCCs flying to SAW. There are also rumors that Ryanir intends to fly to Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen. I don't know whether this will happen or not as you know Turkey hasn't signed the open sky agreement and therefore Ryanair can only fly from Ireland using the existing bilateral agreement signed between Ireland and Turkey.

I also believe that some LCCs from Eastern Europe showed interest in flying to Istanbul SAW. This show that this second airport of Istanbul will enjoy lots of traffic in coming years. With THY and Pegasus/IzAir offering regular domestic flights now the connections from international flights will be easy.

Green Park Hotel group is building a hotel near SAW as well as Radisson SAS intends to build a hotel too.

Formula One race circuit is only approx.6 KM away from SAW. This makes the airport's position very powerful. The F1 visitors from Turkey or overseas will enjoy this connection.

I guess SAW must establish themselves strongly before the government decide where to build the third airport of Istanbul. I understand the studies are on the way and the announcement will be made possibly end of this year.

I haven't heard/read many good things about that airport.

It seems quite unconvenient and the links to IST downtown aren't well organized.

From that point of view, Attaturk's location is perfect...

Yes Flying Belgian, I have heard similar complaints some time back maybe 6-9 months ago, but I understand (and I hope someone can confirm this who flew there recently), that there are some regular bus connections from the airport to Anatolian and European side of Istanbul as well as two public bus (IETT) links, taxis and special buses organised by Pegasus and Corendon based on their departure and arrival times.

I also understand the government wants to connect SAW to Marmaray project - a very large scale project to connect Istanbul suburbs with buses, trains, underground tunnels, fast trams and ferry boats (IDO). I am sure this will take time to finish like other government projects in Turkey!!!

I still think if they had put that airport on the Yalova seaside, it would have been more easy to have inland connections and over the Marmara to the metropolis. But its done, and there were other intrests than mobility...

Hello,

It's seems that we will not have anymore peace in this small airport, long delay, like last year for the final of the champion's league, it was crazy or for the F1 GP. Come on, this airport is really good when you have a bus or a tour operator waiting for you but not if you are by yourself...

According to Airliner World current issue, they will publish an article about SAW in their July edition.
Hopefully we can read and learn more about SAW.

Dear Wolfman30, I do actually live far away from Turkey.
Approx. 24000KM away, in a land called Down Under (Australia).

No way, can't be that far, the circumference of the earth is 40,000km, no two places can be more than 20,000km apart then. :P

14,939 km between the airports, in a straight line, according to Google Earth.

Singapore is almost exactly on the route, so if it's 19,000 km when flying, they don't fly in a straight line.

I flew to SAW with Germanwings late in 2004. We flew in about 02h00. There was a cheap private mini bus service that took us to Taksim. Returning (again in the middle of the night) a beat up minibus took usto SAW. It was not a problem.

Thanks Eurapart. What was your experience of Sabiha Gokcen back in 2004? According to pictures in their web site the airport looks modern and well designed. How was the service, efficiency etc. Your overall experience I mean?

Strange that SAW is indeed the most favourite airport in Istanbul for the moment - it considers itself as the low cost airport of the city however airportcharges do not differ that tremendously with IST Ataturk... and as mentionned above location is not that ideal for those who need to be in the citycentre... so the typical tradeoff airportcharges vs airport location is not really an issue here...

They should dig a subway tunnel to that airport. Istanbul does have a subway, right?
