I don't know where this article is coming from. The CNN article it refers to states that Airbus deny that they have offered standing seats. The A380 will seat 853 in single class formation so if that's what the airline wants they can order one.
Surely all passngers need to be belted in or they become projectiles in a crash?
Standing room on A380?

Seems there may be more to this than meets the eye.

Such seating has been tried in the past without much success. During World War II, Capital Transit (the operator of streetcars in Washington, DC) tried such seating in an effort to boost capacity while preserving some measure of comfort. While it boosted capacity, it was not too popular but was tolerated by the public due to the war effort. It was removed once the war was over. A picture of the arrangement is contained on page 162 of the book "100 Years of Capital Traction - The Story of Streetcars in the Nation's Capital" by LeRoy O. King, printed in 1972. I tired to scan and pot it to this reply, but was unsuccessful.
Well it is actually not a bad idea for short flights... flights for say, less than 3 hours is actually OK, that way the A380 is really an Air-bus, which is simply a bus, dont' need all the flash seats and entertainments...
Can it be done like a ferry? eg you have very close 'standing "seats"' where you tie yourself up for takeoff/landing/emergency/turbulence, but then other times you can go find yourself a seat (large rows of seats, not individual seats).. I mean the A380 can mean something very new for the future, at the moment it is just another aircraft with 2 decks seating more passengers...
I can imagine in China that would be useful, going from Beijeng to Shanghai by standing on the A380 might cost less than the future yet-to-be-built magnetic something train... speaking of that, those trains are crazy, 431km/h!!!
