Cornwall is to get its own airline - Air Southwest - which intends to step into the breach following British Airways' controversial withdrawal from the West Country. Air Southwest is in "advanced discussion" about taking on BA's slots at Gatwick. It intends to lease at least two 50-seater aircraft and hopes to carve a niche in flying smaller planes to regional airports. Sutton Harbour has admitted that without flights to London, its airport in Plymouth would not be viable. It hopes Air Southwest will add further routes, possibly to Manchester and the Midlands. Plymouth airport's owner, Sutton Harbour Holdings, yesterday revealed it was planning to set up the new carrier to preserve an "essential" air link with London. It intends to replace BA CitiExpress's services from Plymouth and Newquay to Gatwick, which are to end in October as part of the national flag carrier's cost-cutting drive. Malcolm Naylor, Air Southwest's managing director, said: "There's still a very good market down here for both business and tourist traffic. The link is absolutely essential for west Devon, the city of Plymouth and south-west Cornwall." Air Southwest is in "advanced discussion" about taking on BA's slots at Gatwick. It intends to lease at least two 50-seater aircraft and hopes to carve a niche in flying smaller planes to regional airports.
