Flying online is easy( except that you need a special software that you can find on their site  ) once you have joined either IVAO or VATSIM. You just have to fill the new member joining form and wait for the activaton link in your e-mail inbox :D
here is a link to join IVAO:
http://www.ivao.aero/hq/

and a link to join vatsim:
http://www.vatsim.net/

and please remember to read the regulation and terms and conditions

and if you want to fly online without a special software just fly using an internet url here is one i know:
FSTOPGUN fly.zapto.org This is not a website but a url to put on your FS multiplayer thing just go to multiplayer and put your name password blah blah and put it on the server.

You should use your email address from your internet service provider (ISP), or an e-mail address from your school/university or a free email address which is not popular and maybe unknown to Vatsim, when registering with Vatsim.

Here are the three steps to do it :D

Step 1 go to the multiplayer on menu

:D
Step 2 go to the multiplayer session

:D
Finally the hardest type the site on the session name and dont worry about the password and click OK

It will take you to the creat flight page then you know what to do  just creat a flight and fly and if you want to make sure you are connected just go to the multiplayer and the options will change into something like disconnect from network, change setting etc.... and when you go to fly now you will see all the original traffic gone and if there is someone where you are you will see him(maybe if you set a date and time to meet someone at a particular airport using the site) and so on and if you want to exit the session while you are flying just press alt and on the menu on top search for multiplayer and exit session :D easy

That is when you are flying on such a network.

IF you want more realism you need to use Vatsim or IVAO.

http://usa-w.vatsim.net/prc/VPTPublic/103/103g/103g.htm For the SB3.0 installation tutorial. and http://usa-w.vatsim.net/prc/VPTPublic/103/103d/103d.htm for FSUIPC

Once you have it installed its only takes you the following steps to get online in FS2004.
1) Start FS
2) put your plane at a gate or ramp
3) start SB
4) click connect

and start a great online experience. :D With professional Controllers giving you an incredible experience.

I think you are forgetting that its a newcomer to online flying :D and IVAO and VATSIM are proffesional online flying things 8) he will get thru some of trouble going thru all that stuff especially the remembering to take the plane to gate or ramp and he might get suspended.....but the other way is good for beginners  but i am not telling you not to do join them but you will find it a bit difficult  but hey the point is to have a great online experience
