Seaplanes

Post by ligna »

There is intention to establish a new aircraft company, which will particularity be oriented in offering amphibious passenger/cargo aircraft services. As you know the amphibious aircraft production has had difficult times but we are confident that with a new use and approach, it could push for new clients and passenger enthusiasm.

For a start, we are looking for acquiring two to three new amphibious planes offering high capacity, approximately 15-35 seats, robust, simple in maintenance and most importantly low in variable and fixed costs. We are at the moment more inclined for turboprop. engines as definitely less consuming/maintenance, but are still open to any propositions.

The distances from takeoff and landing will vary from 50 to 500km, which forces us to find the best range and lowest cost competitive aircraft. Small precision, the aircrafts are going to be in contact with saltwater; we are analyzing the option to centralize all the operation on a local regional airport to reduce aging and maintenance difficulties. The aircraft shall also be easily converted from passenger to cargo use and definitely accredited for both uses in the European Union.

I would be happy to learn more about what products, services and solutions you could propose. So far we haven't found any satisfactory solution except DHC-6 Twin Otter's which are not produced anymore.

Thanks!

I am copying an article from "The Times" below (March 05). You will find your answers why this concept, but business case is not something of my concern: I have a problem finding the right planes at this point.

Does anybody have experience with Beriev?

-------------------
A new seaplane service in Greece could change the style and pace of Greek island hopping for ever. Twin--prop seaplanes are due to start flying a twice-a-day scheduled service between Corfo and Paxos in April. The journey takes ten minutes - as opposed to one hour by boat - and costs 23 pounds one-way and 42 pounds return.
The introduction of the EU's only scheduled seaplane service has been dogged by delays. The planes recently helped a United Nations relief programme in tsunami - stricken regions in Indonesia.
But by early summer, Canadian-owned AirSea Lines hopes to expand the service to connect Corfu with other Ionian Islands - Kefalonia, Lefkas, Ithaka and Zakynthos. There are also plans to fly to Brindisi in Italy and to two cities on the Greek mainland - Patras in the Peloponnese and Ioannina in Epiros. Prices will be up to 75 pounds each way.

With a cheap package flight to Corfu or a Ryanair flight to Brindisi, this will make the kind of island-hopping that used to take a whole summer possible in a couple of weeks. Until the full service is available, it could also make a few days break from your holiday in Corfu even more gramorous - combining travelling with great views as you skim over the Ionian Sea

alternative amphibians

Flying boats tend to fill niche markets nowadays like resorts or utility in remote areas. The cost of developing a new design is prohibative given the low demand.

Gruman offered a civil rebuild of the Hu-16A/B as the G-111 seating up to 30 pax. Did you see the Chalk's G-111 lose a wing and crash in Florida recently ?

The smaller turbo G-73T Mallard is a 17 pax amphib.

Japan's Shin Maywa has produced a civil version of the millitary patroller, known as the new US-2. It flies 2,700nm from a water take off at MTOW with 20 pax.

The Beriev jet amphib carries about 50 pax for 1,500nm.

I've always believed if you want to know something ask an expert,
Vancouver/Seattle/Victoria B.C. are the home to the largest seaplane operations in the world.

Here's a link to a Company called SeaAir who have large operations here as well as connections with ops in the Bahamas, Greece, Scotland.

The only aircraft I can see thats still available is the Cessna Caravan, which may not be big enough to meet your needs.
