I believe that the 747-8 has a lot of mileage (or kilometers) left in its life. The design is proven and offers a number of advantages over the A-380. First, its' structural weight per passenger is less than the A-380. It is expected to offer both lower trip costs (smaller airframes use less fuel) and lower costs per seat (greater structural efficiency).
There IS a market for the A-380, however it is relatively low since it will be difficult (except on a few high density city pariings) to get 550+ passengers who want to fly at the same time. a smaller plane is easier to fill. So, I beleive that the B-747-8 will ultimately sell more units than the A-380. I am not even confident that thhe A-380 will recoup its developmental costs.
