Old Don Muang airport only for LCC?

Post by regi »

This article raises some eyebrows. If you realise that the old and new airport are about 20 miles away rom each other, it is very difficult to use a LCC and connect to an international flight. Some flights of the LCC are also international.

Don Muang reserved for low-cost airlines
Published on Nov 08 , 2005

Don Muang International Airport will maintain its aviation services solely for low-cost airlines, chartered flights and personal jets after the opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport next year, according to a preliminary discussion by a Transport Ministry committee.

Vice Transport Minister Mahidol Chandrangurn, as chairman of the committee, said the committee also agreed to move all cargo activities to the new airport.

"In the next two weeks, the committee will discuss the plans in details," he said.

Tiger Airways doesn't bother:

Low-cost Tiger Airways happy to stay at Don Muang

Singapore (dpa) - Tiger Airways on Thursday welcomed Thailand's plan to keep low-cost airlines at Bangkok's old Don Muang Airport while their full-service counterparts used the new Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

The plan "shows that budget carriers are coming into their own as more and more countries appreciate their importance and contribution to the tourism industry," The Straits Times quoted Tiger Chief Executive Tony Davis as saying.

"This explains why more and more countries are developing specialized airports to cater to budget airlines," he said.

A subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, Tiger's response differed from rival Jetstar Asia.

"It has always been the basis that we consider opportunities for Jetstar Asia on the merits of how it will best serve our passengers' needs," Jetstar Asia said.

Singapore and Thailand have an open-skies arrangement, allowing Singapore carriers to pick up passengers in Bangkok and fly them to other destinations.

Industry observers noted travellers flying to Bangkok on low-cost carriers may have difficulty connecting to flights on full-service carriers.

Hmm... interesting article but i doubt if it will ever go this way. Same thing as before, thaksin and his other ministers were talking that they would keep Don Muang for domestic flights only. But then again, how would it be possible if you land on an international flight into suvarnabhumi and then need to catch a domestic flight at Don Muang  . IMO, i'm not sure if it wil take a long time fore Don Muang turns into a deserted airport. But then again, in Thailand everything is possible :P

I'll be the first to tell you guys about it. I'm leaving for 1 year Thailand on 01/07/2006. Can't wait to touchdown at suvarnabhumi. :D
