Protest at runway 25L

Post by Atlantis »

This afternoon on VRT news 13H.

Only a few 100 people held a protest for the possible lengthening of runway 25L. There were only two actiongroups: decibel 25L and zone S and three communities: Steenokkerzeel, Erps-Kwerps and Kortenberg.
There meetingpoint was on the street before the laningsstrip 25L.

When I saw only that few people it will not have any impact for the negotiations.

Sorry to ask a stupid question  but I'm not aware of all the news anymore since I don't follow everything closely anymore. But can someone tell me why they want to lengthen 25L ?

Is it too short ?

@Killerwhale65

It can be that there were some spotters. I saw on the news a few planes landing on 25L, like Bangladesh.

Maybe some spotters can give more info how long there action was.

@Avro,

It's absolutely not shore that they want to lenghten 25L, it's just a thought.
But when they have to do that, they speak about 900 meters in the direction of Kortenberg.

In my opinion 25L is not too short, but I think they want to lenghten it because with a departing in the direction of Zaventem they have need some altitude, otherwise they are to low when they are overflowing the hard of Zaventem. That's why I think the need 900 meters.

They want to make it longer in the eastern direction so 25L is easier to use for takeoffs.

25L can be used for t/o's now but airplanes are very low over the houses just behind 25L. Therefore, 25L is almost never used for t/o. They want to lengthen 25L in the eastern direction so that aircrafts are higher over the houses when t/o which means the runway can be used more often which on itself means more dispersion. And dispersion is what the action groups want, and get, but are never satisfied with.

In "Jobat" of October 1 there's a very nice article on the front page which stresses the economic importance of the airport. It also draws attention to the "love my job" action.

Jobat is a magazine included with some newspapers in Flanders. The article is available here in dutch: http://www.jobat.be/nl/info/redactie/51.aspx

I believe only the people of the 'Noordrand' are in favour of dispersion.
Since the dispersion plan, new action groups were born and those people prefer to go back to the situation before 1999.

A lot of people works on the airport, but also other people (like me...) that doesn't work on the airport, needs the airport.

I'm sorry to say: it's always the younger people who has many problems with "noisy aircrafts". I never heard my grandmother when she lived near the airport....

Indeed, when I saw the pictures on tv, I only saw "younger" people over there.

It doesn't make sense to just stretch the existing runway 25L,
since there is no taxiway leading to the threshold !
At present, aircraft taking off from 25L have to backtrack when they want to use the full length of the runway.
This causes delays, less aircraft can take-off and land simultaneously on the same runway.

If 25L is to be stretched, a (parallel) taxiway to the threshold is essential.

Skyjet,

I find it very strange that you didn't know that also a new taxiway will be build if the plan's have a go. It's approx. every day in the newspaper or on the news. The main course of the move of the habitants is due to the new taxiway.

But back to the topic. The lenghten of the runway 25L will cost 100 million euro, the new taxiway 35 million euro.

Two important questions about it:

 They didn't know for the moment who will pay this investment. If it get a go, the runway and taxiway have to finished in 2008.

 for the moment the airport can't expand out of it's area till 2011. That was an arrangement like you have the exploration permission for 20 years. So, if they want to build it they have to change the "gewestplan"

Press agency Belga could see a document of BIAC that they are not waiting for a lengthening of runway 25L.

The airport don't need an extension of this runway for it's current and future capacity. It was just an idea of Landuyt to get a solution for the dispersion plan.

This was to read at Belga and Luchtvaartnieuws.

Mr Landuyt is all alone with his plan for an extension of runway 25L. Also Mr Leterme don't want this: it's to expensive and not necessary.

So, that plan will be disappear in the fridge.

According to the latest the negotiations are not moving. Tuesday evening the five politicians who are involved in the debate don't make progress.
The deadline is tomorrow. If Brussels and Flanders don't have a plan, then they can say: "Belgium, YOU have a problem"
